Default Please help! My squirrel friend not feeling well!

    Hi everyone,

I have a wild female squirrel that come visit in me for more than two years now. I named her Squirlie.

A week ago she was being chased by 3 males all trying to mate with her. I saw that she was mated many time by them. It went on a vicious chase for hours all day. I felt so bad and concerned for her because the males all gang up on her at once and wouldn’t stop.

The last 3 days when she visit me. She didn’t eat much, had blood in her urine not cloudy(no acorn in diet) , I see her vagina swollen red and had very thick white discharge. Yesterday and today I noticed her limping on the back legs maybe due to the swelling? She still able to climb the walls and trees slowly. Been laying and hibernating a lot.

Her vagina look more dried today, still kinda red, white pus dried, but still dripping little pee with reddish color and limping. Her fur look uneven don’t know if it was from all the running from the males or some other problems.

Please let me know what I can do. I live in Southern California. Will she heal on her own? What food can I buy to help her heal?

Yeah, mating isn't exactly scattered rose petals in a lot of the animal world. She was very likely jumped by multiple males, the poor little thing.

I am hoping that the white discharge is NOT pus since that is indicative of something a lot more dangerous which would require surgical removal of the uterus.

I would just give her as much food that she likes and will eat eagerly as you can. Things like rodent blocks can be ground up and mixed with something not as healthy but certainly yummy - peanut butter. The idea is to fill her up with food every time you see her so all she wants is to stagger home and sleep when she is done. That keeps her out of the sight of predators while she hopefully recovers.

Having witnessed the mating chase in my yard with 3 resident females I know how distressing it is to witness. I always worry about a fall from a tree or carelessly running into the road as a result of being chased. It would not be unreasonable to think that she could have fallen and injured her leg. Keep an eye on her and see that she progressively gets better and not worse.

As for the white substance…..it is undoubtedly the ejaculate plug that is deposited by the male after mating. It is a waxy material and prevents penetration by another male. The red swollen vulva, as well as the slight blood tinged discharge, is probably due to the act of mating. Again, watch her and see if it improves.

A released female that lives in my yard was mated with on Monday. Following the mating she was chased into my garage where I was able to get the male out and close the garage door. It was then that I noticed that she not only had an ejaculate plug in her vulva, but another squirrel had deposited one on her upper thigh. . The funny thing is, although she was safe and familiar with being in the garage, she wanted out. When I let her out she went up a tree and was pestered again by the male.

Thank you for your help! I’m watching her closely and make sure she eats. She ate more this morning and climb the wall slowly but she made it up safely. I think she just resting in her nest on top of my ceiling.

Yes This is my first time to witness a Squirrel mating chase. I spend that whole day trying to help her but I realized that I cannot climb walls and trees… Squirrels are like ninjas!!!

I will be getting her some yummy goodies to boost her appetite!

Hi everyone, hopefully you can see the picture of Squirlie. This is her today eating on my patio. From what I can see, her vulva seems swollen like it is protruding out. You can kind of see in the picture. Is this normal due to mating? Still see little red in her pee today and back legs seem weak.

Squirlie gave birth to 2 beautiful babies in April, 1 boy and 1 girl They both come visit me everyday as well for treats.

i hope that you can look at the picture and help me to see if this is something to be concerned about. Thank you!
