    Default found an injured squirrel

    Hi there,

My fiance found an injured squirrel while running. We found a rehab place that will take him in the morning. He looks about 5 weeks old. It looks like he fell from a tree and is bleeding. We are following directions from Henry's to take care of him tonight.

Is there anything we can or should do about the bleeding? We suspect it is from his leg. I think it is an eastern grey squirrel.

    Thanks for your help!

Is he actively bleeding? Can you put a pic up so we can see what it looks like?

We can't tell if he is actively bleeding or not. After a closer look he is probably between 5-8 weeks old but perhaps you guys would know for sure. The blood is mostly on his nose. There was blood on the sidewalk where we found him.

I am really struggling to upload pictures, so I am still trying to figure it out, sorry!

You can gently clean him off with a warm, damp cloth. Do you have the ability to feed him anything? I don't know ow far to Henry's directions you are able to go. Keeping him warm, and providing he is hydrated and able, getting some formula into him would help him to be quiet and sleep, which is what you want to prevent further injury. If you do, you need to be extra careful and dispense the formula pretty much a drop at a time. His facial/nose injury may make it more difficult to feed him and not aspirate, so slow is the key.

How is his energy, and activity? Is he lethargic, dehydrated? Or moving around and seeking things out? Have you been able to give him any rehydration? Is he warm and comfy? Just wondering. Want to help you ask best we can until tomorrow.

Is this a vetted rehab facility/rehabber? Unfortunately, a lot of them are overwhelmed with babies right now, so may possibly euthanize him if he’s injured.

Let us know please. Poor baby! Thank you for taking him in. And finding TSB.

Yes, keep her warm. Do you know the rice buddy and sock? Fill a sock with rice and microwave until warm but not hot. Seconds, not minutes. It lasts for about twenty minutes. Wrap in a nice fleece or whatever you can find and place the buddy near him. I gave mine sugar water drop by drop to hydrate before I was able to go to Walmart for PUPPY milk. One teaspoon in one cup I think? One drop at a time is the way to go with a dropper or an insulin syringe. The pharmacist may be able to just give you one if you ask, they have at mine. Is she biting? I didn't need gloves with mine, I just wrapped them in a washcloth like a burrito. He's cute, I hope he'll be OK. He looks good from the pics. Poor nose is going to be sore. Tell us how it goes...

He is pretty tired but he is late. We were able to hydrate him with honey water, 3 syringes full. He is wrapped in a torn flannel shirt in a box that is sitting on a heating pad.

We are taking him here: https://wrcmn.org/ This is the only option in our state that we could find.

We have him in a box with holes punched in, with flannel in the box, with a heating pad sitting under the box. He took some honey water. An earlier commenter said only one drop at a time which we've been able to do with an eye dropper. He is fiesty! We will take your advice about washcloth into a burrito.

    Hi Comfyelephants:
Thank you for taking care of this injured baby Squirrel! Is your plan still to take him to the Rehab facility today?

All that sounds awesome! Feisty is a good sign, hydrated and warm is perfect too. He/she is going to be getting very hungry for milk. Thanks to you for getting him the help he needs. I hope he gets to his foster parents without a hitch. Sooo cute!

I am sad to update you all that he did not make it to the rehab center. I checked on him this morning, and he was alive but very weak. I tried to give him water and food, but he would not accept. He passed shortly after. Thank you everyone for your help.

Aw, I'm sorry. Poor little thing, what a rough little life. I am very happy he was inside, warm, and safe from predators on his last night...
