Exclamation My Squirrel baby has a skin problem

Hi. I got a new Indian Palm squirrel baby two months ago when she is around at one month old. She is doing well but she itches her skin too much. she has got small wounds as the results of these itching sessions on her back. I noticed there are some tiny silver colour dust in her fur in several areas. I cant say what that is..I tried to remove those silver colour dust from warm water soaked cotton several times but it is still there. I dont know what to do. I always put her clean clothes to sleep by washing them using my hands. also she is in a clean cage. can you please help my lil baby ??? she is also suffering some fur losses in those areas.

I will attach few pictures of her fur here.but those are not very clear because she is moving so fast that I cannot take a clear one. there is that silver dust in her fur

    Please reply me

I just love Indian palm squirrels 🥰
I'm not able to tell in pics what it could be, not sure about silver dust. I'm leaning towards mites maybe 🤷
You can use a product called Revolution but it must be for kittens. Maybe Betadine mixed half half water applied with cotton ball.
Wait for others to chime in they may have better options 👍

Yes, I believe that he has what we call "mange" mites in the US. The silvery stuff you are seeing is little pieces of his skin that has been sloughed off due to the little sores from them.

This company: https://www.joespetmeds.com/flea-tic...-cats-dogs.htm is located in Australia - I do not know if they ship to Sri Lanka. The drug name is "selamectin" and the size you want is the "Puppies and Kittens up to 5 pounds." You may find this sold under the name Stronghold or Revolution. There is a new Revolution "Plus" for Cats - do NOT get that. The dose for Revolution is ONE DROP from the container on the skin on the back of the neck to be repeated in 30 days if needed.

Ivermectin will also treat the mites. We would need to know what you find for this before anyone could dose it for you. In this country it is a very common anti-parasitic med given to horses as a preventive - so it is available in places that cater to livestock. I have no idea what form you might find it in there, but it is a very common drug that is used on many parasites so I am sure you have it there...

The mites are species specific, so they won't bother you or another pet but if you have other squirrels I would urge you to treat them all.

OK. So there are lots of "homemade" treatments that simply don't do anything. At one time this was treated with lime dips mixed with borax which was done daily, took 6-8 weeks, and the animal has to be restrained in an e-collar the entire time because licking their fur will poison them. Not an option. Don't use the neem oil either.

So we are left with the Revolution or ivermectin.

Mange infects dogs and cats too, and I found a site - https://www.animalsos-sl.org/product...nge-ear-mites/ - where they are soliciting donations to treat the street dogs that are infested with mange. The product they use is called "Advocate" which is the name that a US drug, named "Advantage" is sold as. It can also be used to treat mange. I don't know the cost if you just purchase it off the shelf, but perhaps, perhaps, if you contacted this charity, and offered to give a donation in exchange for just ONE of the little vials of the med they might help you out.

If you can get some coconut oil, rubbing it on the skin where it is red and rough may soothe it some. IT WILL NOT KILL THE MITES. They are not on the skin surface so you can't wash them off or smear anything on their skin to kill them. The treatments all work internally.

It is possible that this is a fungal infection of some kind, but your description of "silver dust" made me sit up straight because that is exactly what the loosened skin flakes look like. Our gray squirrels tend to start showing signs on their ears first because the fur is so thin there, and the ears crinkle up and look like someone dusted them with silver eyeshadow. I have never seen this on one that did not have mange...

Thank You so much for replying me again..❤️ okay I will try my best to find those drugs and let you know. I will not try on neem oil as you said.

I noticed that silver colour dust on her arms first. those particles stickey.. cant pull or wash them. they are glowing like a dust..🥲🥲🥲 I had 3 Indian squirrel babies prior to this baby...I never noticed any skin conditions on them so this is new to me...

in SL Vets are not good at examining squirrels. They only know about cats and dogs. my two squirrels died last year due to lack of medical help. I took them to vet also. nothing worked for them. now im afraid to take this baby to the vet. dont know what will happen if I do.

Yes it is. I am going to need some help with the dosing and how you dilute it - I will get the info as soon as I can.

You are going to need a 1ml syringe - nothing larger - to use to give this med. It needs to have clear measurement markings on it, because dosing is very precise.

Can you provide a weight for your baby? We need that to dose.

Have you had luck finding the syringe? It does NOT need a needle - no injections here, it is just the only way to correctly measure the small amounts needed to do this.

If you are unable to weigh him, we can make an educated guess. I strongly suggest you read through this site: http://rehabbersden.org/index.php/36...-revised-contd

It has info on these guys from birth to adult with food suggestion, weights, development stages, etc. I have sent this link to other people that have these little guys and they contacted her directly and found her to be very helpful.
