    Default RB

I posted something similar to this yesterday, but have more questions.. my almost five week old baby has had a blockage of some sort. WHICH I finally solved yesterday! He pooped this morning without apple juice! So the leads to my question...When will a suitable time to feed him Rodent Block be? His front teeth haven't come in yet but his bottom have , don't know if this affects it. The one time I gave him RB he got constipated, maybe it was just his tummy acting up or this was some sort of cause to it? I got the brand Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health, this one. https://www.amazon.com/Kaytee-Forti-.../dp/B001VJ56Z8 . Here's a picture of him

    Hi Benny!

First, thanks for caring for this little one! It’s a tough task, but worthwhile. Lots of love to be given from the little fluffs.

Second, let’s see if an admin can merge your two posts to keep all of your little girl’s story together; that helps paint a picture that’s easy to follow as more questions come up!

    To your questions:
@spanky posted the feeding chart on your other thread and it is MOST helpful for healthy growth which simultaneously regulates the poop situation. It’s here:

Next up, the block question. Many of the experts around here (I am by no means one, but I am a parrot linking previous threads!)
will recommend offering blocks early. They won’t really be eaten, but the little ones just kind of chew on them, break it apart, and push around the pieces. Henry’s Healthy Pets blocks are highly recommended, and they are nutritionally balanced, only 2-3 needed per day for all of the nutrients they need. Mine have loved the HHB Wilds and Picky.

Normal rodent block (like the Kaytee you are giving) is offered freely to grown squirrels, but not usually given as early as 5 weeks like your little one. Even so, there are better rodent block options. Teklad is recommend by several pros. Envigo is a second option.

There’s a great thread on it here:

Last up on the constipation issue: warm water baths have been a game changer in the past for my 5-7 weekers. Just do a quick search bar on warm water bath and you’ll find lots of suggestions— I use a cup filled almost to the brim, hold the little squirmers under the armpits, and let them soak while massaging the tummy. Poops ensue and for some reason, it kicks things off to become regular in my limited experience.

Best of luck! You can do it!

Thank you! I’ll definitely order the Henry pellets , he’s no longer constipated! Knock on wood..he pooped about five or six to mess last night so he’s finally passed what I think is the pellets I’d originally bought. Last question for now, when I give him pellets he will devour them. As in start chewing and won’t stop till it’s gone, is this okay or should I give him less of a pellet?

Last thing. Is this the right pellets?

The Healthy Blocks ARE the correct ones. Keep them in the freezer when they arrive. I started out giving half a block, and my Kevin would shred that. Not sure he was actually eating any at that point.

  5. Serious fuzzy thank you's to LittlestMonster from:

I’ve not heard of using a mineral block, but excess salt is definitely not recommended. The HHB are vitamin rich and complete with a balance of calcium and phosphorous. The main mineral issue that squirrels face is an imbalance of calcium/phos resulting in MBD. Diet is essential in keeping them healthy, and when they’re being raised by you, you are 100% in control of that. Daunting, right?! These links will be a huge help to you for diet and a MBD summary.
