Default 1st squirrel rescue advice needed

I have a red squirrel that was in my yard. One of his hind legs is dragging. He is responsive and eating. I noticed him 3 days ago but was not able to catch him until 2 days ago. His leg does not seem to be getting better. He will let me touch it & I do not feel any broken bones.. Any help would be appreciated. I am prepared for this to possibly be a long term situation. If need I would either keep him indoor or build a nesting box, place it near my house & feed him. He was hiding in a nesting box farther away in my yard. I really want to help him heal. I think he is a younger squirrel probably born spring 2021.

Can you locate any prednisone or prednisolone? Anything for humans or animals will work. Prednisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory and will help with swelling if he has pressure on his spine. Someone on here can help you dose it if you list the strength of the meds.

Thanks for replying. I do have prednisolone 5mg for my cat. I have no clue what dose to give the squirrel..

Just a minute let me figure it out. Do you have any idea of his weight? Is it in pill form or liquid?

I’m sending you a private message with dosing instructions. Private messages are accessed from the top of the page under “notifications”.

Thank you so much!!! It is in pill form so the dosing instructions are great. I did get to weigh him - 430g.

Chip has been on prednisolone since 1/2/2022. He does not seem to be drinking water. I am concerned about forcing it bc I have read about aspiration potential. Any advice on water, diet, physio & water therapy would greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Is water available by bowl and bottle? A shallow bowl with slightly sweetened water and some clean pebbles or marbles in it might help. If you were to provide it by syringe you could keep from aspirating him if you just offer it drop by drop and let him lap it.

Items that have high water content like watermelon might be helpful.

I know nothing about water therapy or physio therapy, sorry.
