Default 2 yr. Old fox squirrel with a runny nose suspect teeth issues

I have a 2 yr. old that I've raised since she was about 6 weeks old. She's always liked her jaws rubbered and lately I've noticed when I would give her a nut she has difficulty cracking it. About 2 months ago one of eyes started looking like she had a cold in it. Then about 6 weeks ago I came down with covid 19 . And p0fter a week of me being sick she began to having a runny nose. Which lasted about lasted a couple of weeks . A week ago her runny nose came back but this time she s acting like she feels bad off and on. Her appetite comes and goes. She's wanting her jaws rubber alot and wanting to chew on my fingers alot. It's like she has a tooth ache. Please help

It's possible she may have an odatoma, I'm just going by her symptoms.
The only real way to know is with an x-ray.
Do you have a squirrel friendly vet?

I managed to get a picture of her teeth this morning . Her teeth are not lined up and the seems to be something between her top teeth. I'm extremely worried now . I live in Texas it's not exactly legal to have her. Name: 20211217_005838.jpg

Watery milky eyes are known to be squirrel tears caused by their having pain...
Your picture posted puts me to mind of another forum on a foxer with a tooth problem.
A picture was sent to Dr. Emerson who commented on the "gingival margin looking black."

What your picture is showing also looks to be a Gingival abscess which is a bacterial infection

resulting out of some type teeth or gum issue.

Texas is a really big state. Could you be a little more specific about the towns your close enough to travel to?

I'm in Cooper, thirty minutes south of Paris and about 80 miles northeast of Dallas.

Personally I'd be putting her on an antibiotic.
Not saying it's any cure all but it just might slow
things down while looking for a solution...

The penicillin class of antibiotics are commonly used to help treat tooth infections,
TMP-SMZ or clindamycin are commonly used to treat gum abscess.
We really try not to use (plain) penicillin as it's harder on a squirrel's system, clavamox is a better alternative.
If under my care (without vet assistance) I would personally
be inclined to hit this hard and use Clavamox stacked with TMP-SMZ.

I was finally able to get ahold of my vet and she is will to assist with an antibiotic. But she doesn't know what is safe for a squirrel. What would you suggest??

Scroll back to post #11, both of those meds should be able to be obtained by a vet.

Question Re: 2 yr. Old fox squirrel with a runny nose suspect teeth issues

My vet says she doesn't have Clavamox and the only SMZ-TMP is big tablets for horses. Any suggestion ?

As long as we know the milligrams of the SMZ-TMP we could dilute and break it down for a squirrel's use, obviously all it would take is 1 pill.
Outside that I would suggest Baytril and clindamycin.

How many milligrams or dosing size for a squirrels? Would the dosing size on any of the medication be the equivalent to a cat or kitten depending on the weight?

Common size milligram tablet strengths for dosing to squirrels are: 30,120,480,960 and a powder that comes in 400mg/g strength.

If you can get one of these strengths someone can break it down and dose it for you. If your vet is not familiar with dosing squirrels, please let someone on here do it for you.

She says she also has the Baytril in tablet and the Clindamycin in drops. I'm waiting for her to get back with me on the strength of the other two.. milligrams in the case of the SMZ-TMP it is 800/160 MG. She does not know what the dosing size for squirrels should. She does not usually treat squirrels.

The strength you posted would be the equivalent of the 960mg I posted. I think Clindamycin would be an excellent choice if this is for something oral related.

When the vet removed the lower portion of my dogs jaw due to cancer she prescribed Clindamycin.

The only issue with the clindadrops is that the medication is bitter tasting and might be rejected. But, Baytril is also bitter. Ideally the medicine is dosed so that a very small amount is given at each dose. You can draw up the medicine in a syringe and then dip the tip of the syringe in honey or maple syrup to camouflage the taste.

YOU DON’T NEED HER TO DOSE THE MEDS! Someone on here who is familiar with dosing squirrels will be able to dose the medicine for you, once you have the strength.

My vet has SMZ-TMP in 960 mg, she also has the Baytril in tablet form and Clindamycin in drops. She needs the dosing.
