. What Jett will need is a cage for containment. I would search some of the second hand online shopping options like Craigslist or Facebook marketplace for a suitable cage. The bar spacing should be no more than 1/2”. The taller the cage the better as squirrels love to climb.

Inside the cage you can secure some safe tree branches for him to climb on, just be sure to secure them to the bars of the cage so they don’t fall and injure him. Squirrels love cozy little houses to sleep in as well as some hanging toys that are suitable to chew on, much like bird toys.

Here’s some links of items that others have used.

You will also want to visit the Henrys Pet site online and order some rodent block for Jett. It should be his first solid food. He should be eating it well before he’s given any veggies or fruits. The picky eater blocks are well liked. Another cheaper, but less tasty block option is also available online at Envigo Teklad. The 2018 block is a good choice.

I know you asked for ideas of items to make at home. You can do that but keep in mind that squirrels will chew EVERYTHING, therefore whatever is placed in their cage has to be safe. No plastic. You could hang a pine cone from some natural jute string, provide clean, safe tree branches, etc.

There’s also ideas for cage setups on this sight in the section titled “cages, nest boxes, supplies, etc”

If you have any other questions, please ask.
