What type of antibiotic cream is safe to use so close to the mouth? The inside of the mouth looks good. Not sure why this has developed but appeared in the past twenty four hours.

From what is noted on this, keeping the wound clean is key.
Saline can be used topically on a small wound.
This product appears to be a saline product of sorts. It is noted as 100% non-toxic to pets.

Though some websites note to use neosporin on small wounds; yet this medicaion can numb the throat if ingested.
Save for using a cone to prevent ingestion, it appears neosporin should not be used for squirrels and other animals that lick themselves.
Diluted betadyne is noted as an option to use In cats with small wounds; yet whether it is ok for rodents and how much to dilute it for them,
that I don't know.

I agree with DF, diluted betadyne can be used, but do so by dampening a small cotton ball or Q-Tip and applying it that way. Do not let the squirrel lick or ingest any. Polysporin can also be used, but again, do not allow the squirrel to ingest it.
Coconut oil can be used safely and it will not hurt the squirrel if ingested. It provides anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, so depending on what has caused this issue, applying coconut oil regularly throughout the day is a good option.
I have also had success using organic apple cider vinegar (with the mother) for fungal skin infections. It is also safe for the squirrel if ingested. As with the coconut oil, it will need to be applied numerous times per day, as the squirrel is likely to groom itself and by doing so, remove it. So, reapply as needed to keep the area covered.

I thought to add that raw or sterile Manuka honey even better, has been used by veterinarians on small cuts and abrasions and shallow wounds.

If there is any issue of an abscess that would need to be treated.
