    Default Treatment by Ivermectin

    Hi

A squirrel with severe mange comes to my backyard and I gave him Ivermectin (uncooked size of rice) using walnut covered with peanut butter.
But he noticed the medicine and didn't eat all, just ate 30% of Ivermectin.

Could you offer advice as to how to give him, please ?

    Thank you.

What flavor is the ivermectin? It is made for horses so it is flavored to appeal to them - apple, molasses - and sometimes peppermint, which horses adore and rodents HATE.

Try a pecan half. Cut that in half again so he isn't getting a big nut to eat even though he is discarding part of it. The smaller a goodie is, the more precious every single bit of it becomes! And try covering it with something more strongly flavored - I recommend Nutella.

    Dear CitterMom,

Thank you so much for a quick reply.
My Ivermectin has no flavor unfortunately, it was no choice.

    I'll get pecan and Nutella.

    Thank you again.

    Sorry, I misread.

Rodent hates flavored Ivermection so it was lucky.

    Peppermint. They don't like peppermint.

I am speaking from experience and am nowhere as knowledgeable as the wonderful people on here. This past spring I had two backyard girls with terrible mange. I purchased the apple flavored gel ivermectin. I cracked walnuts in half, put the recommended dosage inside the shell and on the nuts inside. It took 2-3 doses and now their coats are shiny and have completely grown back. They do steal our hearts and we want to do everything we can to help them. Good luck!

    Dear Maria C

    Thank you for your reply.
I’m glad your backyard girls healed from terrible mange.

The squirrel in my backyard has a terrible mange, it worsened during Ivermectin delivery.
He still has an energy to crack the walnut shell ( I used non-shell walnut for Ivermectin) but the mange covers 40 % of his body.

I’m wondering if I can give him another Ivermectin soon because he had only 30% of medicine yesterday.
Should I wait for 6 more days ?
Next time with Nutella as per previous suggestion.
(I purchased Nutella and pecan yesterday. Thank you, CritterMom)

Every time I see him his mange area is larger.
I hope somebody can provide me an idea.

He is a clever squirrel, is good at cracking walnut easily.
He noticed Ivermectin on a little walnut covered with peanut butter.

    Thank you.

I think I waited nine days in between doses. I saw no improvement after the first dose either. I know you’re anxious to see him heal and maybe someone else can provide better guidance on how long you should wait for the second dose.

    Thank you, Maria C.

He came to my back yard and looked fine excluding his bald skin.
Thank you for the information after the first dose, it's helpful.

I hope 30% amount of Ivermectin is working good.
I wish he could have the full amount of medicine yesterday.

I'm going to wait 6 more days to next dose, I'll have 1 week interval between the dose.

    Thank you.
