    Default Aspiration Pneumonia (Minely227)

I am currently on this same boat. My little guy seems to maybe be 4 weeks of age. He started clicking today and nose I can tell he's breathing hard. I've been out all day looking for Cito or Baytril but noone will give it to me without a prescription. I don't know anyone who has extras and most Vet offices only seem to treat dogs and cats not "exotic pets". Please help I need Cito or Baytril ASAP before I loose my little man I have Amoxicillin but I read it's dangerous for them and can cause intestinal tract issues which can lead to deadly diarrhea.

All ab's could possibly cause "intestinal tract issues" aka diarrhea.
Amoxicillin is not the preferred ab but it can work and if that's all
    you have
what is more dangerous then using it is not using it!
Without treating with an antibiotic, aspiration pneumonia will kill, period!

I hope you realize you can't just give an ab to a squirrel, it has to be diluted to the correct milligrams
and dosed according to their body weight.

I need help too please! I'm about to start my baby on Baytril but have no clue how much. He's about 12 grams in weight and I do have a 1cc syringe. I need to know how much Baytril to add in his formula/pedyalite and can I give him formula? Or should I just stick to Pedyalite to avoid diarrhea?

I was able to get Baytril as of an hour ago. I am now researching on how much to dilute and if I should dilute it with his formula or pedialyte? I haven't received a response yet. My little man is about 4 weeks and weighs approximately 12 grams. I do have a 1cc syringe too. Can you please guide me as to how much Baytril I can dilute and how often he needs doses? I am brand new at this.

What is the milligrams of the baytril ? Is it liquid or pill?
and, check your scale again, 12 grams at 4 weeks is unheard of...

it's pill 22.7mg. I weighed him again and he's approximately 18 grams. The scale must not have been even last time, I apologize.

minely227 what sort of squirrel is this? What species? If this is an Eastern grey squirrel, 18 g. makes no sense for a four week old.

Can you please post a picture? There is a paper clip icon when you open the Reply to Thread window and there are a couple steps involved in selecting the photo, then including it in the post etc.

Also, please note in order to see any new posts you will need hit the "refresh" button on your Internet browser.

Are MFS and Minely227 one and the same? I don't think so, the ages of the squirrels are very different.

It would have been less confusing if you had started your own thread.

Keep the squirrel at least slightly upright and warm, but this will not cure aspiration pneumonia, but may buy some time. Cuddling is a good way to achieve this and it also calms the squirrel. Antibiotics are the squirrels best chance.

Please can you post a picture, 18 grams would be a hairless pinky not any where near a 4 week old squirrel
Seriously wondering if your scale is weighing ounces or if you have a squirrel or a mouse??

He's a white-tailed antelope squirrel according to what I looked up for Nevada squirrel species. My husband found him on a construction site floor next to his dead sibling. Squirrels don't usually roam around our neighborhoods which explains my ignorance to all your questions.

I just sent dosing instructions in a PM (Private Message). Do not mix meds with pedialyte or formula.

Thank you so much for taking care of this little guy. I hope the antibiotics get him back to healthy. Cuddling with him will help keep him calm and reassured. They are used to cuddling all of their time with Mom, the heat of her body, her heartbeat, and the rhythm of her breathing.

When you get a chance here is a good video about feeding technique, it gives a number of tips about how to prevent aspiration to which these little ones are so vulnerable.
