    Default Just saying hello

Hello, I've been lurking here for a few weeks and just wanted to say hello.

I've never had to do rehab for squirrels but I have many in my yard and love them all. I love to take pictures of them and I have two nest boxes with video cameras inside so that I can watch them. They don't really need my help but I enjoy giving them housing that predators can't get into. This all started after watching groups of crows decimating the squirrel's Drey nests up in the trees.

This probably isn't the best forum for me but I'm tired of posting about my wild squirrels in other forums where people talk about what pests they are and how to be rid of them. I don't understand this kind of thinking because mine have never damaged anything more than a cheap plastic bird feeder and they provide endless hours of entertainment. They are such happy, intelligent little creatures that work together as a community.

    Anyway, hello everyone.

Hi! Nice to have you here! Wow, LOVE that big house. May I ask where you got it and how much it cost? I am jealous on behalf of my own yard squirrels.

LOVE that you have nest cams. May I suggest you start a thread about your fuzz-tailed friends in the grey squirrel forum? We LOVE pics and videos, the more the better. Someone just joined recently who had a squirrel nest right up against a window, and he chronicled from when the baby was a wee mite to his recent explorations outside the nest.

Your nest cams can be a source of information, discussion, and entertainment. You are with like-minded folks here. We love to share and celebrate (and yes, brag a bit too!) about our fuzz-tailed friends. Looking forward to seeing your pics and hopefully videos.

Hi and welcome! The TSB is exactly where you belong! Like you, I started by just enjoying making friends with my yard squirrels and helping them when I could. Despite becoming more involved, it is the small daily interactions with my wilds that I enjoy most. We love to post and see photos of our wild friends and to hear stories about their antics. Those look like really nice nest-boxes, I think I will try them when my current ones need replacement.

Thank you all for such a warm welcome. I was under the impression that this was a forum specifically for rehabbers and that’s why I said it probably isn’t the right forum for me. I imagined that I might not be welcome since I can’t contribute on that subject….boy was I wrong. I feel very welcome now

Chirps it is an extravagant squirrel house for sure. Part of the reason I sprung for such a big one is because the grey squirrels build such big nests inside the smaller houses that it blocks the camera from seeing what’s going on. They haven’t managed to fill the Nuthouse up yet though so I get great views of them in that one.

The Nuthouse is from JC Wildlife. You can get it from their web site or from Amazon here https://www.amazon.com/JCs-Wildlife-...6632191&sr=8-2

It’s $159 but it is very well made and will last forever. I particularly like the predator baffles on it. The squirrels hang out on the decks when it’s sunny and the hawks and crows can’t bother them. Another reason for splurging on them is that I've had this property and been enjoying the squirrels here for 25 years without ever repaying them for all of the charm that they bring right to my door so I figured they deserve it.

I need to find that grey squirrel forum that Chirps mentioned. I have some interesting videos that I certainly have learned from. Like when I decided to clean one of the houses out by emptying some nesting material that had gotten damp during a big winter storm. I caught on video the very moment that the house’s occupants discovered what I had done. I had two very angry squirrels cussing me out for a good 20 minutes. Lesson learned and the video is a riot to watch.

Currently I have babies in the smaller house. They are adorable and are only about a week old so no fur yet and have tiny little arms and human like hands. The videos of them aren’t great just now because their mother, Roxanne is a great nest builder and she has blocked the camera pretty good. In another 2 weeks they will be climbing up in good view of the camera though. I can hear them nursing and everything ! They make a lot of noise at feeding time.

I also made a video of Roxanne building their nest before she gave birth. It only took her 1 hour and 17 minutes to build it, amazing !

Oh, I forgot to ask; can anyone recommend a good place to host my photos at so that I am not using up your space by uploading them here? I used to use Photobucket but that's no longer an option. I'll put my videos at Youtube and link them but I have no idea where to put photos.

    Thanks

Oh would I love to see those videos! Not only do videos like that warm your heart, but they also make us better rehabbers. If we can do it as close as possible to the way mamma does it, our babies will thrive.

Nancy in NY here uses SmugMug, I think.....hope they're still around!

Don't worry too much about using up our bandwith, though -- one of the reasons we stick with clunky old expensive VBulletin is so we can have zillions of photos!
