These sweet creatures found their way into my heart "accidentally" as well. I love all animals so I never hated or disliked squirrels but I wasn't particularly enamored with them either. They were part of the world and that was fine. Then a neighbor had a tree cut down and there was a nest of two tiny squirrels - two weeks old. The neighbor had no interest in doing anything with or for them.
I had never taken care of wild anything though I did some how know enough that they could not have cow's milk. I took the dear babies, started my research and by the grace of God they survived my loving but awkward efforts! My husband build a pre-release cage. My boy released himself before I would have liked though I am just trusting (hoping, praying, fingers crossed) he was old enough. He never came back to m but there is one squirrel around who's not quite as skittish so I like to think that is him. My girl - Squirrelie - lived in the box I provided after release for a few weeks but then found/created her own nest somewhere. However, she still visits me for walnuts and avocados. As spring approaches, I do not "want" babies and I certainly don't want any to be orphaned (they are A LOT of work!
but I will be here for any should they find their way to me.
