Thread: Need temp home for young flying squirrel...maybe?

Default Need temp home for young flying squirrel...maybe?

There was a young flying squirrel in our wall that had been stuck for a couple of days. She is young and I would guess recently weened. Initially I just planned to keep her overnight and fed here sliced up fruit and veggies. She appeared fine and readily ate and pooped a lot by the next morning and looked healthy. I was hesitant about releasing her but I left her outside with the cage open. She didn't budge even after a few hours when it was getting dark. She seems to have no real interest in leaving her smallish cage, which I thought would just be temporary.

She is slightly bothered by people, and I'm not sure what to think. Not including her tail, she's about 2 3/4" long. I don't intend to keep her long term, but would she mature over say the course of a month? Am I currently doing the right thing? Any qualified advice would be helpful. An internet search for local rehabbers hasn't been fruitful, due to covid it seems.

I've notified one of our Admins, Spanky, in Georgia to see if he can help you. In the meantime, flyers love mushrooms, blueberries and full-fat vanilla yogurt . Of course, if she realizes you have those, she may never leave.

Are you certain there no more trapped within the wall?

Releasing her back to her colony / where she came from would be ideal of course. However, if she does not go you'll want to make she is released with a group of other flyers that includes both sexes (a colony). I'd not wait a month and then release her as a singleton (alone). Unlike most other squirrels, single / lone flyers should never be released, always a colony.

Is it possible a whole family / colony may have perished trapped in the wall?

I currently have a colony of 4 fall 2020 flyers that will be placed into a large release cage in mid to late February for a Spring release. I'd be happy to add this baby to that colony. If she is a fall baby as you suspect, there is still time and space to get this one integrated and a part of the crew for the Spring release.

I am in NE GA on Lake Hartwell. I will PM my number.

Do you still need a home for your Flyer?
