Default Squirrel attacked by a cat

A neighborhood cat attacked one of the squirrels in our yard. I was able to scare the cat off and rescue the squirrel.

The poor little thing is alive, but can't really move its legs. The only visible injury from a cursory look is a scratch on the ear, but we assume there is some leg damage at a minimum. The squirrel is still eating (It ate a bit a walnut we gave him/her).

I'm based in New Rochelle (Westchester County, NY).

    Thanks for your help!

The poor little thing died in our arms

Edit for stupid question: one of the hind legs moved a bit, but we can't see any breathing movement not can we feel its heart beating. We assume that was just a post-mortem twitch?

Put a mirror under its mouth. If the mirror gets steamed, it is still breathing.
