Default (I hope Iím in the right place) 4 week old sneezing

I think I posted this in the wrong place before...

I have a 4 week old eastern grey. Iíve had him for 24 hours now. He seems to be a stubborn eater. Heís active. But he sneezes every so often. I donít hear any clicking. He seems to make like suckling noises every so often but Iím still paranoid that he could be getting pneumonia. Do babyís sneeze often for no reason? I donít have any perfumes or scents around him so that wouldnít be the reason for his sneezing. Thanks in advance

Yes, they can sneeze often for no apparent reason... but... what is the history? If he fell from his nest, good chance he bumped his head / nose and that may be why all the sneezes. They too often land on their head at this age.

As for feeding, it takes a while for them to get accustom to their new normal. Make certain he is fully hydrated before feeding any formula (what formula are you using?). Most of us give only hydration fluids the first 24 hours after intake.

It helps to be warm, dark and quiet place when feeding. Wrap him up like a burrito in a peice of cloth (fleece or flannel preferred) and if his eyes are open (I assume they are not at this age) cover them also, that will help keep them calm.

He was pulled out of a bush by a neighbors dog. (They called us because we found a squirrel the week before and bought everything to foster them). No punctures anywhere. Iím feeding him either fox valley squirrel formula or a pedialyte mixture (literally anything I can get into him at this point) heís hydrated from what Iíve read (pinched his skin and it bounced right back. Both eyes opened yesterday, he started peeing and pooping on his own literally 30 minutes after his second eye opened.

I can get .5mils in him and then he quits. The most Iíve ever gotten into him was 2mil at a time. Heís only 49grams and I know he should be at least 60 grams at his age. Iím now starting to worry thereís something else going on thatís causing him to not want to eat.

I'm very new to this. I found my first every squirrel and a pinky on July 27th, at 12 grams. He was around 52 grams when he was 5 weeks old. I got booster from Henry's to add to his regular formula, and then he started gaining weight fast. I weighed him just now (at 7 weeks) and he is 145 grams!!! I know he is still not at his "ideal" weight, but he looks good (not skinny or thin) and he is healthy... I think maybe sometimes they need to "fix" and regulate before start gaining weight. Again, I'm very new, so, just sharing my experience with my Buddy.

Are you keeping his formula real warm during feeding?
Squirrel babies like their formula close to hot, a lot warmer then one would a human baby.
It tends to cool off when feeding unless container is kept in some hot water or on a heat source.
They do tend to refuse it once it starts cooling down.

Please post a picture of this baby for assessment...

Is the formula or water or whatever you are feeding warm? I remember my boy used to refuse to drink even if it was slightly warm... he still doesn't like it if it's not really warm. They seem to like it when it's really warm (not hot though).

Yes I’m keeping everything I give him warm. He just eats so slow it cools down way too fast. Any suggestions on how to keep it warm the entire feeding?

Just took this photo. I managed to get 3mils of pedialyte into this guy finally.

Do you have a fleece hat or some kind of "snuggle" bag for him? I feel like they love to be in something warm and covered up. Especially when they are all by themselves, I think it's harder to keep themselves warm. Just a suggestion...

I've been trying a few things with my baby... If you have multiple syringes; fill them half and half measure; you can keep one syringe in a very hot water (keep it warm) while you feed the the other one. When the first one seems to be cold, switch to the one in the hot water, which should be still warm and put the first one back into the warm water.

Or you can try "double warming" - sorry not sure what's the correct term and English is not my first language. basically, put the formula in a very small glass jar, and then put that glass jar into a bigger cup/bowl filled with hot water; when the formula is warm enough pull it into the syringe a very small amount (you might need to refresh the hot water in the bigger bowl until the formula is warm enough). As he drinks, fill it up from the warm formula.

    Best of luck!!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but when they are small, especially if it's a singleton, they need tons of love, holding, playing etc. (since they do not have siblings to snuggle up and play), right? They get "wildened up" when it's time to release them.

Aww, the photo is super cute!!!!

As for keeping the food warm, I heated up a glass of water super hot, and split the formula into different syringes. That way, while you are feeding, if a syringe cools off you can put it back into the water to heat up and start feeding the warm one.

A fleece or flannel of some kind might help keep the baby warm and feeding easier.

Thank you everyone for all the suggestions! I think Iíve got feeding down now. The past 3/4 feedings heís eaten 2mils before he quits (I donít know what everyone is talking about with squirrels will just keep eating if you let them. Mine quits once heís full). Heís currently snuggled up in my jacket with a warm rice sock.

Iíve been trying to google how active he should be at this age and it comes up with nothing. He seems to sleep all day except right after feeding time. If Iím suppose to be stimulating him with play could someone suggest how to do that?

I use a coffee warmer, Amazon has them for about 11 bucks. It's a lifesaver when feeding. Keeps an even temp.
I use a thermometer in the water to make sure it's not getting too hot👍

Yo thats so smart! I was thinking of buying one of those candle warmer plates to try and get the extra wax out of the bottom but decided to just do it the way with boiling water but NOW Iíve got a good reason to buy one.
