When do young squirrels come out of their nest?

When do they start coming out of their nests?

I'm no expert but I think at about 7 or 8 weeks.

I have a Momma with baby(s) in a nest box now. From her actions, such as going into her nest box during the day and chasing off other squirrels when they get to close, I believe they were born around the middle of July. 15th maybe.

Momma fell about 60 feet a couple weeks ago so I've been monitoring her recovery closely. Today she would come out to a near by limb and run right back in. After she did this two or three times I noticed a tiny little face peering out from deep inside the nest box.

I think they are about 6 weeks old and she was making her baby stay inside. And that nest box has a predator shelf so the little one was having to climb up onto the shelf to see out. Little stinker!

Won't be long now though.

They are so cute at that age!

I think this is about right... I have been told by folks they have seen 6 week olds exploring outside the nest, but I have never seen a 6 week old out of the nest. And I have been lucky enough to enjoy watching many, many litters of squirrels in nests over the years.

I'm moving soon and unfortunately that means I wont be able to see the babies of the mommy squirrel that comes to my place daily.
Hope mommy squirrel will take great care of her family and may they have a healthy long life!
