    Default White Mucus in Poop

Peanut is just about to turn three. He spends most of his time on our balcony, but comes inside to sleep. His diet consists of two Henry's blocks daily, Pureem primate blocks, and an assortment of veggies. He gets blueberries and whole nuts for treats.

For the past week or so, he has been obsessively grooming himself. He also is aggressively grooming us and grooming his stuffed toys. We can not find any of the skin irritation associated with mites and he is not loosing fur. He has also been making noises of pain when he grooms himself, especially when he goes after his hind quarters. And for the last two nights, he has been nesting on the floor. Very unusual for him.

We just noticed a white mucus like substance in his poo. Picture attached.

    Please help.

Upon further examination, we have found some scabs and small irritations. They are under his testicles, on his leg and outside of the thigh...

Does anyone have any ideas on whether the mucus in poop and the other symptoms are related or what we can do to help him feel better?

    Please and thank you!

I am not sure what that is in the feces... hopefully someone will know.

The close up pics are good, but adding pictures of the entire squirrel may be useful. Are the edges of the ears "crispy"?

My first inclinations to suggest you wipe down those areas several times a day with diluted betadine. Betadine is a iodine like solution you can get at any pharmacy... dilute it with water so it looks like weak tea. Then wipe the affected areas several times a day.. not need to rinse. Betadine is good at relieving skin irritations kills a lot of bacteria and other things that may be causing a problem.

Can insects get into the porch?

Ants might be drawn to the squirrel's food.

Ant bites can be quite uncomfortable.

Something might have laid eggs in the food.

It could be caused by stress, dietary Indiscretion, food Intolerance or bacterial infection.
The passing of (large amounts) of white mucous in stool in the absence of diarrhea suggests that it is a form of irritable bowel
which is an irritation and possible inflammation of the colon or large intestine. When irritated, the intestinal tract creates an
extra layer of protective mucous lining. In an otherwise healthy squirrel I would recommend providing an additional probiotic to
    help stabilize the gut flora.
