Deb, you don’t have to worry about her not having a squirrel mama to teach her squirrelly things. It is literally coded in their DNA. I marvel when I watch new releases on their first day doing things that no one taught them to do. They will dig in the dirt and even eat dirt.
If you give them a nut they will take it and go dig a hole and bury it. They even know about the ‘pat, pat, pat’ thing with their hands to press it into the soil. That just amazes me. Another one that amazes me is flying squirrel babies. They know they are supposed to leap and glide. A baby flyer will bob the little head up and down and then LEAP. When they leap, those tiny arms and legs will stretch out to unfurl the patagium (wing canopy). A flyer mom didn’t teach them to do that. They just know.
What is her name?
