    Default Weak Adult Fox Squirrel

My family has found an adult fox squirrel, and there's something wrong with it. It was laying on the ground, and when we approached, it moved away but weakly. After leaving it for a bit, we found that it had not moved far from it's original position. Using gloves, we picked it up and put it in a box. When we got back to our house, we put it in an old rabbit cage (that was clean) with some bedding, a bowl of water, and some cut up strawberry in our basement. The basement is quiet and cool. This was about a day and a half ago. That night, we checked on the squirrel, and it had eaten a quarter of a strawberry, but it would still just lay on its side (like it was dead) with its eyes half open breathing. Using gloves and a syringe, we started to give it some water, because it was dehydrated. The squirrel drank water from the syringe, and at one point held on to the syringe with its paws. Fast forward to the next morning, and the squirrel had made it through the night. When we checked on it, it was curled up asleep in a ball. We thought it was getting better. Fast forward to that afternoon. We found a little pellet of poop (like a rabbits) in the cage with no sign of diarrhea. We gave the squirrel an apple slice with some honey, and we tried to give it some water, but it wouldn't take it. Fast forward to that evening (tonight), and it looks like the squirrel has eaten a little apple. We found him with his head and a paw resting on the water bowl. He still doesn't really move much. His breathing looks labored. We gave him two pieces of carrot. There are no visible external injuries. When we've seen him walk, he doesn't limp or give any signs anything is broken. When we held him to give him water in a syringe, nothing appeared to be broken. We thought that if he wasn't going to make it he would have died by now, but he's not really improving. We don't want him to be in pain, but we don't really want him to be euthanized. We're not sure what's wrong and what else to do. Most of the time he's just laying on his side, breathing. When we come to check on him, he does become more alert and opens his eyes. He also moves around a bit but not a lot. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong with him?

There are a couple of places in Colorado that are recommended by a trusted member of this board. Reach out to Kendall Seifert in Littleton, CO 303-907-1555 or UrbanWildlife Rescue, Inc. Denver 303-340-4911. There is another facility that was ok called Squirrel Creek, but I don’t have a phone number. DO NOT USE GREENWOOD REHAB FACILITY. With a compromised squirrel it’s usually best to see if you can locate an individual as most large facilities will euthanize. The exception is the two contacts I gave with phone numbers.

Try offering this little guy some avocado (no skin or pit), some type of lettuce like romaine, fresh coconut meat or fresh corn on the cob chunks. He might eat these more readily. Watermelon is a great source of hydration. He must stay hydrated.
