Default Having trouble to find rodent block in CR

    Hi!
As many of you already know, being in Costa Rica is causing me a hard time to find the adequate supplies for my 6 weeks baby Bo.

Today I found this option and I can order it online, but again, not sure if this works as rodent block.

    Thanks for your help!

Those are fine for rodents who eat hay, but not squirrels. Sorry!

Can you get any rat foods from companies like Mazuri, ZuPreem, Enviro-Teklad? See if they are available on eBay . eBay sellers ship everywhere .

    Hi again!
Sorry to be such a pain 🙈

I ordered rodent blocks from the States. It will take a while till they get to CR as customs are super slow, specially these days with the pandemic.

In the meantime, I found these squirrel products on a pet shop here in CR. Will any of this work? 🙄

Bo’s already 6 weeks and I know I should be introducing her to blocks already... What should I do until my blocks order arrives in the next 4 weeks?

I really want to do things right for her. She deserves the very best ❤️

Till the source you ordered arrives, it is the pellet diet you are looking for, like the last bag. The rest of the bags appear to be a mix of treats that should be very limited in the diet; some of them very likely should'n't fed at all for they are very high in Phosphorus to Calcium, which included with the chow can lower the healthier Calcium to Phosphorus ratio even or even invert it that over time causes the bones to lose calcium promoting the development of metabolic bone disease that if not corrected is fatal. It is percentages of calcium to that of phosphorus in the diet that are crucial for supporting the bone and metabolic health of rodents cared for in captivity.

If you would, please list the noted percentages for calcium and for phosphorus, for if the ratios are not supportive of bone health, you would need to add a very small teaspoon fraction measure of calcium powder to the meal to support this source to be so.

First of all, thanks for the reply

Here’s a zoom of the ingredients and nutrients on the pellets you mention. It looks blurry but I think it says:

    - Dry material 89.60%
    - Digestibility dry material 85%
    - Raw proteins 16%
    - Ashes 10.7%
    - Raw fiber 14%
    - FND 28%
    - Calcium 1.55%
    - Phosphorus 0.24%
    - Lysine 1.02%
    - Methionine 0.25%

    Ingredients
    - Alfalfa hey
    - Oats
    - Fermented soy
    - Fermented grass
    - Herbs
    - Calcium carbonate

Let me know what you think 🤔

This pellet diet appears to be suited for rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas (strict herbivores), with very high in fiber and calcium content (grasses, alfalfa hey, and herbs) with a total diet Ca:P ratio of (6.45:1), than the far closer ratio range found to well support the growing bodies and bones of rodents (omnivores).

Thanks once again for the help!

Seems like I’m running out of options here in CR... don’t really know where else to find some squirrel supplies

I’ll wait for my rodent block to arrive and hopefully it will be here sooner than expected 🙄

I’ll be back here asking questions if I find any other option...

    Thanks again ❤️

Well, seems like I won’t be getting my order of rodent block from the US as the postal service is not delivering here... and a private shipping could cost up to $90, which I can’t afford right now

I was reading the nutrition posts and threads and saw there is a way to make homemade blocks. All the recipes include Henry’s vitamins, which I’d LOVE to order but is impossible these days.

How can I replace the Henry’s vitamins? I really want to do the blocks myself. I’m afraid of my Baby Bo not getting the nutrients and vitamins she needs. I don’t want her to go through any nutritional deficit or disease.

I’m a bit frustrated and worried...

I’d really appreaciate some insights on this matter.

    Thanks to all! ❤️

Are you able to get a rodent block diet from Mexico; I saw one from Purina is listed to be available there?

Not sure if I can have it delivered to CR but surely I can check.

Do you by any chance have the link for that Purina block?

    Thankss!

I couldn't find the details of the ingredients initially for Purina 5001 rodent diet; I was able to locate it on a PDF file. And though what is listed of percentages of Ca:P in ratio is much the same as Harlan Teklad Global rat diet, this source also includes alfalfa hay, which as commented here is not good for tree squirrels, but support that is suitable for ground rodents that eat hay.

If I find anything else from Purina that doesn't include Alfalfa hay, I will let you know.

To keep your squirrel from developing bone loss, you will need to provide a source of calcium and magnesium in the diet.

Calcium carbonate, or calcium citrate powder and Magnesium citrate are sources to look for.

From there I will be glad to help you as is possible to fill in the diet in support of his nutritional needs; this really will much depend upon the

availability of key sources being available in your area. If you have any questions you can contact me by PM.

agustinanavarro, was your baby squirrel on formula, and is she still on it? What kind? She really needs formula, mostly, to have full nutrition until she is about 10 weeks old....
