I had a baby brought in who has a cleft palate. I was able to feed her by filling the hole with the nipple, but I am concerned about later in life. Has anyone ever experienced this in a squirrel before?

Poor little baby
I have never seen this before. I wish I could help. Thanks for caring for her, Duckman.

You've changed the way I see all things around me now and, because of you, I want to be a better person. This is not goodbye, my sweethearts. You be at peace, your work here on earth is done... now you are finally, truly free. Until we meet at the Bridge again, please remember that I will always love you.

One of my rehabber pals raised a cleft palate baby last year. Feeding her was always complicated, as she had to avoid food becoming stuck in the cleft and then causing infection. My friend ended up keeping her as an NR when it became clear she could never eat normally in the wild.
You seem to have some awesome vets out there, though, Michael; I wonder if an 'Operation Smile' could be done on a little squirrel?

Thanks Maura! I have had a chance to check her out completely (had to knock her out to see all the way down her palate) and the good news is that the cleft in the palate has sealed up already. So she only has a cleft lip. That should be a simple "Operation Smile" surgery, to just close up the gap.
