I have a male squirrel (13 weeks) and a female squirrel (9 weeks) that have bonded like siblings. Will they mate? At what age do they mature or hit puberty? I am in Virginia and the fall hits in October. When should I start the soft release with both squirrels? How many nest boxes should I put out for them?

I would keep them together. Older age at release has its advantages.....the squirrels seem to be a little more savvy. Don’t place them into an outside release cage until the younger one is at least 12-14 weeks old. Once in the release cage give them 2-3 weeks to learn the sights, sounds and smells of the outside before you release them.
