Exclamation 1 year old hand raised Eastern Gray squirrel ate azalea bloom has diarrhea now help!

Have hand raised Sneezer from 3 weeks on. He’s A year old male Eastern Gray squirrel now with neurological damage from his original fall when found in Sept 2018. While gathering outdoor branches my dear daughter picked an azalea bloom for my hair. Sneezer snatched it and gobbled half of it down before I could get it away from him. At first I thought nothing was going to bother him. He acted fine and had regular bm (he has to be stimulated to urinate and will of course defecate too). Now 8 hours later his bms are liquid. This is a situation I have not had before. Please advise

Sneezer is 285 grams active, sassy, and sweet natured even with the liquid poo.

Welcome to TSB, and sorry it's under these circumstances. Azalea will cause nausea, vomiting or diarrhea in animals who ingest it., but is not fatal
. The best thing you can do for your poor guy is to ,keep him hydrated. Diarrhea causes dehydration so you want to get fluids in to him asap. The idea is to flush these toxins out. Good luck!

Thank you! Normally this would be my strategy but this fella is the first I’ve not been able to release in decades. He’s stolen my husband’s heart and Hubby has been beside himself googling everything under the sun! He considers himself to be Big Daddy Squirrel since he has been so involved in Sneezer’s care.

    Thanks for caring for Sneezer!

I have azaleas blooming early this year and saw a wild juvi munching on one yesterday.

Thanks to your husband as well. They do grow on you.

He’s beautiful! Does he eat some type of rodent block? We always like to confirm that the diet is good for captive squirrels.

What a beautiful boy. You guys must be in the south. Sneezer is small at 285 for a year old squirrel. I have a 7 week old that is around 300 g.

I love the description of your husband being big Daddy Squirrel. Bet he never thought he would describe himself that way

If Sneezers diarrhea does not clear up you can give some pumpkin purée, if that does not clear than Imodium can be given. We can dose for you,

Thanks redwuff -- those were the things I should have recommended last night, but I was lying in bed typing on my phone after "just checking TSB for the last time", and fell asleep twice in the middle of trying to answer the post

Finally figured out how to get back on here to thank everyone and give updates! Yes it’s been years! Thank you everyone for the help with my boy! He’s 3 now and 560 grams! We feed him on Henry’s squirrel blocks, started with the high protein when he was first able to eat them, now he prefers the picky eaters blocks. Name: 2E5C266D-B770-47F1-8179-12307713DA42.jpg
