    Default Problem or no problem?

    Hello TSB friends,

As you may see in the photo, it dose not look great!! This has appeared 4 days ago out of no where, he did not get stuck in anything or play with something sharp! I am worried this maybe an infection of some sort- I would be grateful for any thoughts or suggestions for a remedy maybe.

    Thank you everyone

I would either spray or wipe it down with some diluted Betadyne solution (about 25 drops to a quarter cup water) once or twice a day. Don't use anything like neosporin or first aid cream on it - if you put something sticky like that on he will fuss and clean it obsessively trying to get the yuck out of his fur and will make it worse. The betadyne dries like water - no stiffness or stickiness but is a wonderful antiseptic. And it doesn't hurt!

Thank you for your advise, I will go get some from the store tonight and do that. I was afraid this is a sign of MBD or something serious!!

A complete picture, his age, and diet may help with diagnosis as well.

Looks like maybe he's chewing on it.

    What's your baby's name?

    Thanks for caring for him!

    Hi Rocky,

His Name is Moby, he is almost 6 years old I have had him since I rescued him when he was a baby he lost his Mom- His Diet varies. 1-2 henry blocks a day, some snap beans, maybe 1-2 fresh organic hazelnuts and some organic oats like 0.5 gram a day.

Somewhere in his environment is a pinch point - check the cage. Where the sides meet is a prime spot - someplace the bars are close enough together to allow the tail to slide in easily, but is a narrow space - an eighth inch or so. As soon as they feel the restraint they will jerk it away and can do this or worse.

When you find it, an easy way to solve the issue is to take a long strip of fleece and wrap it around and around the spot to "fill in" the area in question.

I don’t think it’s anything serious. Just watch him to make sure he isn’t chewing it. Good to see Moby again. He looks great.

Ok Update, I took a closer look at his tail today, there is no doubt now that he is doing this, that part of his tail now looks like he took tiny bites off it

Does he get plenty of out of cage time?

Could be like a nervous tic.

Does he have limbs etc. to climb and play on?

    I'm just throwing ideas out!

Yes he is only in the cage if I need to leave for a few hours a day 3-5 hours max. otherwise he is out and about and has always had the run of the place
He dose have a tree branch that he uses daily-

I started treating it today, so I will give it until friday and see if there is an improvement

If this truly is barbering to the point of actually causing issues like this, and not him nibbling something that is itching because it was injured, there may be an underlying cause that is physical. You may want to dose him with some Revolution. It is a spot on anti-parasitic marketed for dogs and cats. It is by prescription only but can be ordered OTC at Joes Pet Meds: https://www.joespetmeds.com/flea-tic...-cats-dogs.htm

Get the "puppies and kittens up to 5 pounds" size. It ships from Australia and may be labeled as "Stronghold" instead of "Revolution." It is the same med. Dosage is 1-2 (big foxer - I would use 2) drops on the SKIN in the back of the neck. I stress skin because you need to part the hair so it does get on the skin - they have such dense fur. Re-treatment is 30 days.

If you think he injured it - and it sure looks like a partial tail degloving in the pic you have up - and is now nibbling, it is a complex problem, because healing causes itching which encourages them to chew it. If it continues, you may want to think of putting him on Benadryl for a few days. The itching from healing is a histamine reaction - and Benadryl is an ANTI-histamine. If you decide to go this route you will need to get an accurate weight on him. The Benadryl would be the Children's liquid.

Can you get a closer, better pic of the wound?

    Hi Crittermom,

Thank you for your advise- I did buy that like 5 years ago and never used it, so I would have to order it again- Since yesterday I have been using diluted Betadyne solution, 3 times a day, I just added today's treatment- do you recommend I stop that and get the one you told me about now?

No - keep using the betadyne. Hopefully this is a situation of him messing with it because it is sore - and the betadyne will heal it so freaking fast that maybe you can get it closed up and he will leave it alone without any more drama.

Have you actually seen him chewing?

I hope so- No, I cannot say that I have seen him chew on it- but nothing else is making sense to me- I wash his sleeping fabric every two weeks and leave them overnight outside to get fresh air. So I know nothing is attracting dirt or bugs-
