Default 4 week old eastern grey

Hi there guys! I’ve been reading through a ton of the threads in here trying to get as much info as possible about my little guy and y’all have been so helpful!

My little guy is 4 weeks (I think) I found him in our arena (I ride horses) on Friday Nov 1st. He didn’t have his eyes open when I first got him but he did have most of his fur and his bottom teeth. His eyes opened on Wednesday Nov 6th and he has become so active lately and I just upgraded his cage.

I will attach a photo of his new cage! I have a non shut off heating pad half under his bed and a litter pan in the corner that I am encouraging him to use (it’s going very well!). I have old t shirts filling his bed and carefresh bedding in his litter pan with some paper towel with some pee on it to encourage him to use it.

Please tell me if I need to change anything!! I am feeding him esbilac powder formula 2 parts water to 1 part formula to one part cream. I have ordered the Fox Valley 20/50 formula and it will be here on Tuesday.

He eats 5-7 ccs every 3 hours or so.

Eyes open normally at 5 weeks...
Are you sure that's a grey? Could be the lighting but he looks to have a lot
of red coloring especially on legs. Possibly a fox squirrel?
Definitely start transitioning over to the FV 20/50 as soon as possible,
Esbilac formula(s) are unstable and no longer recommended.
Do you have a weight on him?

I do believe you have a fox squirrel!

Is the heating pad under the bin? Not inside where he can chew on it?

It needs to be half on, half off where he can wiggle off of it if he gets too hot.

You have a sweet baby there!

    Thanks for caring for him!

Thanks for the correction about him being a fox squirrel! I was wondering why there was red on him but knew he wasn’t a red squirrel. I do have the heating pad under the tote and it is only under half so that he can get away from it!

    . He’s adorable! . I Fox squirrels...we don’t have them here in Florida.

I see that you have ordered Fox Valley 20/50. Did you also order some rodent block? The first solid food you want to offer him is rodent block...no nuts! Henrys picky eater or hazelnut blocks are well liked, but a little pricey. They are a supplement block meaning you feed 2-3 per day along with healthy veggies from the squirrel diet pyramid. An alternative block is Harlan Teklad 2018. It is a nutritionally complete block, and is usually accepted if no other foods are offered first. I always give veggies and a little fruit for variety even with Harlan block. Both blocks must be purchased online. Whichever block you decide upon offer only the block initially until it is being eaten well. He’s old enough now that he will begin to nibble on block if it’s put in his cage.

As a rule I don’t give any nuts until my squirrels go out to the release cage. It avoids squabbles and stashing, which can make them aggressive about protecting their nut.

I will definitely get some blocks ordered for him! The potty training is going really well I think. When I first wake him up I put him in his little box until he goes potty and then I feed him 3ccs then let him digest for 10 minutes and make him potty again. Then give the other 3ccs and make him potty once more before letting him snuggle back up in his t shirts.
