Default Finger caught in cage... now hanging by skin I think

This happened 2 weeks ago. Our Nick got his finger caught on the upper corner of his cage. We have since built him a huge enclosure to replace his cage. He never seemed bothered by this. It never bled. It looks like his little pad tip and nail was twisted to the side. I’m not sure what is holding it on. Maybe some skin. There are no vets in the area that will see squirrels. I figured if he didn’t want it dangling there he would chew it off. At this point I’m wondering if I should just clip it off. I’m a surgical scrub and assist in in surgeries so I’m confident in my ability. Just need advice.

Ouch! I’m surprised Nick hasn’t chewed that off. I really hate to comment on it because you are a better judge of what should happen than us. It does need to come off but I fear a bone might be holding it on.

If it’s just small tissue holding it on... sure, I would snip it off. If a bone is involved I would be a little more cautious. Whatever you decide, I would clean it with disinfectant to minimize the risk of infection.

I ended up clipping it off and he didn’t even flinch!!! It’s all healed up now and he’s doing great. It’s almost like he was declawed he does absolutely fine climbing and everything. I was very surprised he didn’t chew it off himself

Perfect. He will never miss it. I have a flyer that lost 2 toes. Doesn’t slow him down at all!
