Default Lethargy, low energy in 9 wo male squirrel

So not sure what’s going on with Zanos. He just seems super low energy and worried what it could be. He’s 305g on 24cc of fv 2x a day with rodent block, cabbage, sweet potato and Brussels of free feed. Could this be the start of MBD or AP? I have cipro 500mg, amoxicillin 500g. I also noticed his penis was slight swollen so I’m guessing the sister is latching it again. I don’t hear clicking he’s just super low energy. Any help would be appreciated.

Low energy and lethargic sounds an awful lot like A/P. By the way, drop the cabbage and brussels sprouts and give them only occasionally and not together - bot of those are gas producers for animals as well as people. Leafy greens are good!

Will send dosing for Cipro 500 - by far the best choice if this is A/P. Did he aspirate?

Not that I saw...I usually immediately suck the nose and that hasn’t happened to him weeks. I’m hoping he’s having an off day but should I start him on the cipro just in case? I also gave him a tums to increase calcium. Ill cease the cabbage and sprouts. Is romaine and snap peas ok? I have tons of those. Update he’s currently using me as a tree, running all over me lol. so seems his energy is a little better after I held him for a bit.

Well, then, I would watch him. You have the dosing should he suddenly crash. And yes, romaine and snap peas are great - most of us are in varying stages of financial ruin simply from having to buy sugar snap peas...

Lol yeah I got a huge bag of it and was a little shocked by the cost lol. But I’ll clean out their dish and add in the peas and romaine

Your boy should not have any chance of MBD considering that he is still on formula. I would not add any calcium.

Are you positive his penis is not blocked.

How could I tell that? I haven’t actually seen him pee because they have a litter box area that they both use. Should I try and stimulate to see?

Ok just saw him pee, and after eating some snap peas and sweet potato his energy levels are back up. I think I hopefully just caught him in an off moment. He normally doesn’t let me hold him for very long and I was cuddling him for a good 20 minutes and he just wasn’t moving like his normal lightning speed. I will keep an eye on him and hopefully I was just being a nervous nelly since these are my first squirrels. Thank you to everyone’s input and help. You guys really are the greatest!

ouch!. You need to separate them until that penis heals up. There is aproduct called Yuk! That can be put around it once it heals. He won’t like you if you put it on before it’s healedeek

I have to quibble about Yuk. I got it to keep my boy away from a tiny sore he was making bigger by licking. It did absolutely nothing to stop him AND it burned ALL of the hair off the area I applied it.

Oh dear! Well is there anything natural that I can apply to prevent her from suckling that won’t hurt him?

I have had mixed success with Yuk! It has kept many a pennies safe, but there have been a few that thought that it was gravy. I never had any hair loss, but if Yuk goes on raw skin, it burns like hell.

Is he too old to put in a baby sock with holes cut out for legs?

I hope you have separated your two squirrels. I have seen on TSB incidences where penis have been in such horrible condition from suckling, the boy had to be euthanized. This is waaaay serious.

Yes I have put one in the huge dog carrier and the other in the Henrys cage. I have a PRC but that is downstairs and I would like for them to still have full use of the room when out of their cages. The only time the suckling is a problem is when they are sleeping so I hope this helps him heal up.

Just a quick update. Zanos is back to his old self and two days in a separate cage at night has made his penis look sooo much betters. I am still putting a little neosporin on it but all redness and swelling is gone! Zeb doesn’t like being separated at night but I’m hopeful the new Henry cage will make her feel more comfortable
