    Default Ground squirrel wound infected

Hi I haven’t posted in a long time I’m a wild rabbit rehabber for East Valley Wildlife and since my first squirrel that the wonderful people on this board helped me with I have rehabbed many ground squirrels since then but I haven’t had any wounded . I’ve Mainly done tinies I’ve fed til soft release . I have an adult rock squirrel that I’ did a soft release with his 4 siblings , today I found him with a infected wound so I trapped him and need to give system antibiotics , if someone can tell me the best antibiotic and dosage I would be so grateful . I have Most of the general antibiotics Name: 32ACC327-E50C-45C3-9DFD-D608E43C7E76.jpg

Those aren’t maggots on his wound, are they? Do you have Clavamox or Clindamycin?

Either of the antibiotics Mel mentioned would be good. Actually, we don’t have ground squirrels in FL so I have no idea what they weigh. Are they about a pound???? If you can give me an idea on weight I can dose both of these antibiotics. I would also need the milligrams (mg) of your tablets.

I have seen these guys out west. Use 1.5 pounds. They look like good sized eastern grays with sort of sparse, stubby tails when you first see them.

Hi sorry didnt mean to wander away from this thread for so long i put him him on baytril only because I’m used to doing dosages for bunnies with that .im about 5 days into the baytril should I continue the full course then start one of the other antibiotics or swap Them now ? Here is what I have and was wondering if I can use the amoxicillin instead of the clavamox since it’s oral powder suspension is easier to dose instead of the tablet and capsules? Pics of what I have below . And yes they weigh around a lb and 1/2. Name: 23D88315-E969-4EA8-8674-0253949ACDFE.jpg

Herd, it depends on how the wound looks NOW whether to continue the Baytril or not. After 5 days of treatment you should see dramatic improvement if it's working. Usually if you aren't seeing improvement in 3 days it's time to move to something else. As a general rule, Baytril would be a poor choice for wounds.

If the wound looks better I would continue for a 7 day course. If not I would stop the Baytril now and switch to Clavamox. By the way, Amoxicillin is NOT a suitable substitute for Clavamox (Amoxicillin/Clavulanate). Amoxicillin might be acceptable for a UTI but not for a wound. Most wounds have Staphylococcus involvement. Almost all Staphylococcus (>99%) are resistant to Amoxicillin but they are susceptible to Clavamox. The reason is because the Clavulanate component blocks the organisms ability to produce enzymes that inactivate the Amoxicillin. In simple terms the Clavamox works, the Amoxicillin doesn't.

You can start with the Clavamox. If you need it later we can add the Clindamycin.
I am sending dosing for both antibiotics (Clavamox and Clindamycin) in a Private Message.

I wanted to add something because I know that you're a rabbit rehabber.
Do not apply this information to rabbits. Rabbits are very different due to their digestion. Antibiotics that squirrels can take can be deadly to rabbits as I'm sure you know.
The antibiotic that are safe for rabbits are limited.
