I have a southern flying squirrel that loves fruit. Watermelon, mango, apples, etc. Unfortunately, gnats also love the fruit. I give him fresh fruit everyday. How can I repel the gnats using a method that won't irritate my little guy?

I'm gonna lurk here in case anyone comes up with a method that really works.
I work at a nature center, and we have six different animal habitats where the animals require fresh fruits & veggies every day. Guinea pigs, bearded dragon, hissing cockroaches, box turtles, blue-toungued skink and hermit crabs. The fruit fly, or gnat, situation is 12 months per year and absolutely horrendous. We've tried everything. I'm all ears!
