    Default Baby ground squirrel

A client brought me a California ground squirrel that’s severely dehydrated. I’m warming it and hydrating it before I start feeding it. I have lots of experience raising fox tree squirrels but haven’t taken on a ground squirrel before. Is feeding the same for ground squirrels just on a smaller scale? I’m still raising a 9 week old fox so I have esbilac And fv 20/50. About how old does she look? Thanks!!

Are her eyes open? Can we see her tail? She is adorable!

Sorry, yes her eyes are open, her top teeth are in and the underside of her tail is furred. In her dehydrated, emaciated state she’s 59.5grams.

Yes, feeding and steps are pretty much the same as a tree squirrel.
Just use the Esbilac until her eyes open.

Note that most of the time when a baby ground squirrel is found... it is because the mother sensed a health condition or genetic defect, and deliberately exposed it.
So there is a very low success rate for saving baby ground squirrels.

Thanks Javarat for the information. I guess the rest of the story was someone found the baby stumbling around in the road late last night and tried to warm it and get it hydrated. Shortly after I posted here it started having seizures and passed away. At least the poor baby is at peace now. Thanks again for the info!

So sorry the baby didn't survive Sounds like she was too far gone by the time she was rescued.

Just wanted to add that, here on the East coast, the same thing holds true for chipmunks -- our most common ground squirrel. The mother tosses them out when something is wrong, and often these babies don't make it even in the hands of experienced rehabbers.
