    Default Puncture Wounds on Pinkie

The Pinkie that I posted about yesterday was never reunited with its mom. The person tri d very hard but night came and she turned it over to my tech who already has experience, and already some pinkies in her care . It has a very minor scratch ; see first picture:

So, when the tech collected this baby, she was presented with a second one... The cat that apparently hurt the first one, was allowed back outside (??!!??) and nearly killed a SECOND baby . See pics:

My tech kept both on electrolyte solutions during the night, but said the second baby is very difficult to feed; barely taking anything. What do we need to do from here? Redwuff mentioned Clavamox, so I will post the weights as soon as get my tiny scale
( sending husband now) down there , or if we can just dose it regardless of grams , what amount can we start immediately? Can something this tiny take antibiotics? And does it need pain medicine?
Pinkies are still very new to my helper and I, but we are willing to do best can. Our local ( “real”) rehabber gets so flooded . I honestly hate to turn these over if she’s as crazy busy as I figure already is .

I’ll dose at 30 g. Give me a min. Is your Clavamox 62.5 mg?

Dosing sent for 62.5mg strength Clavamox. Poor little bub.

Hope she can pull through. I should have said that if a cat had him DO NOT REUNITE. I hope my mistake does not cost this little one her life. We just can not trust finders to give the full picture cos they just do not know. Get her on antibiotics as quickly as possible. She should have been started last night. Have your tech give a slight pinch of probiotics in her hydration fluid.

Oh, I reread and saw the badly injured baby is a second one. Just to be sure, I would put both on Clavamox. If you can get me a real wt I would prefer going off that.

Ok the weights are 33g and 29 g; I think she empirically treated them /cleaned wounds last night with something she had on hand . But we have the tabs or powder (62.5). Would topical lidocaine be of any help for pain?

The tech empirically treated her with some things she had on hand at home last night; seriously doubted this one was going to make it but she’s doing a good job getting up all hours hydrating. Just said the worst wounded one won’t readily take anything. Can we sub q something this tiny?

You could do infant ibuprofen. I am not sure if a pinkie can take tramadol. Let me look.

The dosing I sent in a pm was for 30 grams. That would be fine for both babies.

    Perfect , thank you!

I guess I kind of dropped the ball on this one ; I should have been more persuasive with the woman. She seemed very convincing that the mama was actively trying to retrieve it, and that the scratch was barely visible. I guess in my mind the benefits of getting back with mama , and her nursing care , was worth the possibility the scratch was as minimal as she described ? But next time I’ll make the urgency/death threat clear, without bending. She was just so adamant about wanting to thisnon her own, and reluctantly didn’t change her mind until late in the day . And even then, didn’t meet up to hand it over to the tech until much later
And then the cat got a second one.

It is tough working with finders. I just read that Metacam should not be given under six weeks of age.

Ok ; will stick to your recommendations! I just checked and no sign of anymore babies . Hopefully if she’s lucky enough to have any surviving young, she moved them. I hate the thought of her having an empty nest .
I’m sorry just one last (?) ; if the baby continues to barely drink anything ( electrolytes or formula) should we attempt to do sub q ?

If the baby refused to eat, try stimulating before or during feeding.
Sometimes they have to pee before they eat, or half way into it.

I had a little one about 2 years ago that absolutely refused to eat as well.
I tried everything. Finally the only thing that worked was adding a
small amount of (full fat) vanilla yogurt to the formula.
Never had a problem after that.

Unfortunately it usually takes a day for Clavamox to kick in. Try getting just a drop at a time in. If she just lets it drip out of her mouth and won’t swallow, then I would sub q. She must have hydration and nutrition..

    How is she doing now?

Got news from Snicker Bar... and it seems pinkies are doing fine, are stabilized and both eating well now and the puncture wound looks a lot better already.

She sure is keeping her eyes open on those babies
