Default TJ the Bluegrass Squirrel.....Anger Issues..white Iris

Hey Everyone...long time no see....Been Traveling...TJ has not been.....this last two weeks she didnt go...I had to make a run to california and thought it best for her to stay home. Well.....she is pissed off with me.Like Angry, squeeking, wont let me in her cage. Before I left she was fine. (My husband takes care of her when I am gone on strict details) I noticed she has a bit of white in the iris of her eye...what was a loving squirrel when I left is now a she devil....in her cage..when I let her out a while ago for most of the morning...it took me an hour to catch her...because of her fave game of tag....but once in the cage....FEROCIOUS. Like lunging, teeth chattering and hissing. IS it the season? Is she becoming a woman? (she turned a year old in september). I mean Gracious. My sweet loving baby has went crazy. I am in georgia..so vets are a no go. But Dang. Someone help a girl out. Her Diet is vegetables...leafies, squash, mushrooms, henry blocks, a slice of sweet potatoe when she is loving...avocado slices. I mean....Queen. her poop looks good...shes peeing no swollen under...just the lil white iris...Ive read it maybe nutrition but she is pretty healthy and weight wise good. I mean....separation anxiety from two weeks? We have been remodeling the kitchen...could that be it?

Hi. Very often when this happens, one of the things people ask is whether you came back smelling different. Did you happen to use a different perfume, lotion, soap, detergent while you were away because squirrels are very sensitive to scents. Some can cause them to become very irritable.

Actually this is not that uncommon. Squirrels do best when the routine stays the same. If you deviate from the established routine they can get pissy. I have heard of others that receive the ‘treatment’ when they were left in the care of someone other than their primary caregiver. They will make you ‘pay’ for it.

Squirrels usually select a ‘mom’ as their favorite human. This chosen one can do anything with the squirrels. Anyone else is treated with indifference or flat out aggression. It is actually one of the reasons we discourage pet ownership of squirrels. It’s pretty tough when you have a beloved squirrel that attack’s your spouse, children or parents. If I remember correctly wasn’t she raised around a lot of people on concert tours?

I suspect that leaving your girl has angered her. She might go back to her loving self, she might not. There are other considerations as well. She is a year old and could very well be wilding up. Even the most docile pet squirrel raised from a pinky can wild up and be a tyrant. That ‘wild at heart’ nature is coded in their DNA. They are just becoming what their nature tells them to do... become a wild animal. She could also be in heat and this will pass.

If hubby gave her a lot of nuts while you were gone she might have a stash in her cage. If that’s the case she will defend it aggressively. I would rule that out. One last thing is smell. If you have a different smell like colony, hair spray, shampoo, etc they go bonkers and will attack you like a stranger.

If she is healthy, you might what to prepare her for release. She will thank you for it and you might just spare yourself injury. Until you get it sorted out please be careful. Squirrels have caused some pretty bad injuries.

I’m not sure what you mean by white iris. Does she have white tears?

She has a white eye not tears. Ill try to get a picture. She is fine when I let her out of cage. I dont think she is drinking water. She had nuts hid in her box.... i finally got her caged cleaned out ... like.... clean. But in the cage she lunges and growls in her box. So ... she maybe pissed with me LOL. But the white eye... its white only in the middle... has me concerned.
