    Default Paralyzed squirrel

I am a vet tech and I have been rehabbing baby squirrels for 2 years now. I recently got an adult squirrel who was shot with a pellet gun. I did xrays and spine is not damaged according to the xrays. The doctor thinks it must have damaged the nerves causing the paralysis. We did 2 days of dexamethasone shots with no improvement. I do not want to euthanize because she is eating, peeing and pooping and she seems to be warming up to me. I am starting to be able to pet her. I just feel bad that she just lays around all the time and doesn’t have much of an appetite. I got her to eat a little apple, avocado and blueberry. I have been giving her a little bit of squirrel milk thinking the fat and vitamins would be good. The bullet is still in her body which I am concerned about and will she ever warm up to me so I can make her happy? Any advice?

You never know about how they will feel. You might want to try gabapentin.

Giving her time is about all you can do right now. Is she paralyzed in all four limbs?

You might see some improvement with an extended course of steroids like prednisone or prednisolone. A good quality rodent block like Henry’s or Harlan Teklad is vital for her long term health.
