    Default Calcium dose?? HELP

Please help! My release guy (released at 4 months old -in Early April) has come to me w back leg paralysis. Looks like MBD. I have powdered calcium carbohydrates & mixed it according to the package but have no idea the dosage for an adult squirre. He weighs 469grams. He is in a bad way.

It is very unusual for a released squirrel to get mbd. This could be from a fall that injured his spine. Do you have him contained in a cage of some sort? The protocol for MBD is to get 500mg of calcium into the squirrel asap. It won’t hurt him if he doesn’t have mbd.

After doing that do you have access to any prednisone? If this is a spinal injury prednisone is his best chance at recovery. Can you post a picture?

Spread that 500mg out over about a half day, not all at once.

I just verified 1000 mg. Of calcium carbonate is equal to 400 mg of elemental calcium. The 500 mg. of elemental calcium is what you need to get into the squirrel.

If you can’t locate any prednisone you can pm me your address and I will send you some pills. Folks on her can tell you how to break the pill down and administer it.

What’s the antibiotic for? Is the wound on his back bad?

Yes, those injuries dont look good. What antibiotic is he on? Do you see any puncture marks like from an animal? The fact that they are located on his back could explain the loss of use of his back legs.

I hope other more experienced eyes will chime in. I have reached out to an admin to take a look at the pictures and offer advice.

What antibiotic have you given him?

Make certain he is getting hydration - very important.

A rehabber I text w gave me instructions for the antibiotic. I have Tramadol, is that similar? Also have gotten instructions on that. Don’t have infant meds, but easy to get.

Tramadol is excellent especially if he needs steroid (prednisone/dexamethasone) treatment for paralysis. Do you have access to a vet?

Those wounds look horrific... poor baby. Sending prayers.

Possibly have access to a vet on Saturday. It’s not legal here, but it’s a fellow squirrel persons vet.

That looks like a dog or Fox bite (probably a dog because a fox would have eaten him). He needs to be seen by a vet and have x-rats taken. Hopefully his spine is intact and it is just swelling putting pressure on his nerves. Continue with the Clavamox and start Tramadol. Let us know if you need dosing help, we need what size tablet you have and squirrel weight.

Keep him well hydrated, you can add a small pinch of table salt and add some sugar to help him if he is dehydrated. After a couple drinks of the DIY pedialyte, keep him hydrated on regular water.

I agree it looks like a bite. And a shake could have caused spinal trauma.
