    Default SMZ-TMP Dosing

I have a 40 gram baby that just came in cold and clicking. Warmed and carefully re-hydrated still minor clicking. Have some leftover SMZ-TMP - dated (filled) 6/17 (48 mg/mL)

Any thoughts on med date and dosing? I can get a call-in scrip later today. Dose now with leftover or wait until 10AM? It's 7AM now.

I assume this is in suspension, corrrect?
If so I would toss it.
Have a script called in for Baytril in suspension.
    SMZ-TMP is slower acting.

Totally agree. SMZ-TMP is ok for soft tissue infections, etc., but Baytril is still my pneumonia drug of choice.

I found a current box of Baytril Injectable 22.7 mg/mL, not compounded in suspension. I know straight Baytril Inj can cause damage to mucosa. Approx 1 1/2 week old baby.

Yes, injectable Baytril must be diluted before given orally. Do you have any saline or lactated ringer solution to dilute with?

Personally I wouldn't use the injectable on a 40 gram baby
if you can have a script called in.

I have many vets that can call in script but this baby is now critical. I just did Subq L Ringers as she is no longer taking fluids orally. Breathing is labored. Any thoughts on Baytril injectable Subq diluted with sterile L Ringers as a last ditch effort? Dosing?

She was out in the cold and damp prior to finders bringing in.

Warm now with hydration under skin but labored breathing.

Injectable Baytril can be given orally; it's what I have, and 22.7 is the preferred strength for small mammals.

What is the baby's weight? At this young age weight is critical for proper dosing.

She's 40 grams but not taking any fluids. Lethargic, labored breathing. Subq Baytril is a last ditch effort and the only option I can see at this point.

Sorry, I would not. I have never sub-q'd Baytril in 14 years. You could INJECT the first dose, according to WMB (below)

At 40g, Wild Mammal Babies recommends two doses daily of appx 0.015ml

    Everyone: check my math please.

    I get .016
This would be the loading dose, given once.
All others would be cut in half and dosed at 0.008
    twice daily 12 hours apart.

EDIT: OK I see that she isn't taking oral good.

    Here's the chart.
Have to go off board for ~ an hour.

Since she is critical I am going to go with Subq on the first dose and hope she improves enough for oral thereafter. I am going to blend the .015 with L Ringers (sterile injectable) to cut down on tissue damage. She need more fluids anyway.

    THANKS!

Thanks Nancy -- I should never try dosing when I'm in a rush -- I'm bad enough when I'm going slowly

Thanks IR and Nancy. I dosed in a blend with L Ringers. Awfully small dose to measure but luckily I have some .5 mL insulin syringes. Not hopeful with this one but I have to try everything I can. I am not home and don't have a lot of meds with me.
