    Default She ate a battery

So I left my little runt Ember unsupervised in a closed room thinking everything harmful was put away but she found a battery and bit into it. is she going to be okay? is there anything I can do? she seems fine I believe she ate it yesterday or today I just found it now.

I would keep a close eye on her mouth and whether she is pooping and peeing normally. Batteries may have something in them that may burn, so is she eating and drinking as usual?

I would be very concerned about blockage if she ate the battery. Do you have a vet?

Did she take a bite out of a battery or actually swollow the whole thing?

What kind of battery - alkaline? rechargeable? Snap a photo and post it including the bite area. Most batteries have a zinc casing.

Your battery is a heavy duty one containing Zinc Chloride: https://www.yorkshiretrading.com/pro...k-aa-batteries

I would bet she did not swallow the zinc metal shell but she may or may not have eaten some of the electrolyte. The recommended treatment is Famotidine, Omeprazole, or Sucralfate according to this: https://www.thespruce.com/what-makes...-toxic-3385501

At this point since it took you a while to re-post any treatment is probably a moot point. A vet tech or senior rehabber can probably advise if any additional treatment is necessary for this highly toxic poison. I assume you checked back in after posting and read my post about liquids and fruits to flush and aid with motility. The treatment in the above link also suggests dilution. I would say it is safe to assume some of the electrolyte probably was swallowed and passed already. In addition to batteries there are many other hazards in a room including but not limited to live lamp cords, painted wood, plastics etc etc. I would suggest supervised playtime no matter how "squirrel proofed" the room is. Nothing is squirrel proof! While I was writing this my Kami who was sitting on my shoulder one minute just ran down and ripped one of my laptop keys off the keyboard making me chase her.

    Ember's a very pretty girl!

okay thank you so much. hopefully a vet tech or senior rehabber will answer today. i will give her fruits and flush her mouth out with water. and you are right. no more unsupervised playtime (better that way more time i can actually be with her ) and thank you i know she will love to be told shes pretty even with a scuffed up nose

Great job! No need to flush her mouth at this point. Supervised playtime is not only for their safety but also gives them the interaction and enrichment they need. Squirrels are very intelligent and need companionship.

Do you use this diet? https://www.henryspets.com/healthy-d...pet-squirrels/

yes i do i actually just made a chart of what she likes and dislikes and what we’ve yet to try. i also started giving her a little virgin organic coconut oil every so often and she loved it. and okay thanks for the info. always trying to be the best mommy to her. is there any ofher foods that arent on that chart that they can eat or is that basically it? she can be really picky sometimes.

Remember that chart begins with a good rodent block like Teklad or Mazuri with Henry's Blocks as a supplement. If she has issues with her block there are "boo ball" recipes on here, I have 8 NR's and feeding is a challenge with 8 having different like and dislikes. It's more important to avoid what's bad for them. If it's not on the chart you can always ask on here and one of the admins, vet tech's or long term squirrel holders will have an answer.

It's good you live in SC where you can legally keep her. It's the only other state besides FL I would live in. With good diet and lot's of care she should live 9+ years in captivity!
