Default Cat being in baby flying squirrel, help.

My cat brought in what I believe to be a baby flying squirrel. He is completely covered in fur and his eyes are open. He is breathing normally and I see no puncture wounds. But for some reason he isn't moving and I'm not sure what to do. I have in an old tshirt on a heating pad on low. I tried to give him some pedialite with a syringe but he isn't opening his mouth. There are no local rescues around me and I don't want him too die. How can I help him?

Can you tell us what city you are near? Maybe a member is nearby that can provide assistance.

Cat bites can be nearly impossible to detect even for the most experienced. And cat bites and scratches are deadly for squirrel because of the bacteria and potential for infection the cat represents. So this little one will need to get some antibiotics to be safe. Do you have any on hand? If not contact family, friends and neighbors and see if anyone has anything left over... you will need only one pill. If you find an antibiotic, share what it is and someone will advise if it will be effective.

Best options are Cipro, Augmentin or Clindamycin. The animal version of Cipro is Baytril and the animal version of Augmentin is Clavamox... Clindamycin is ClinDrops.

When you say he is not moving, does that mean he is not moving any of his limbs at all? Can you post a picture of him?

I live in vidalia, GA. I just went to check on him and he has crawled across the box. I have amoxicillin on hand, I just need to know how to give it too him. I think he was in shock maybe? I'm not sure. I can't find the option to upload the picture.

Medications are given by weight. Do you have a kitchen scale you can use to weigh him?

Do you know with this moving if he can use all 4 of his legs?

Amoxil is not the best for cat bite, but better than nothing if you cannot find any thing else. In addition to his weight we'll need to know the strength of the amoxil.

The pill is 500 mg, and I don't have a way to weigh him, but he can fit in the palm of my hand.

I am waiting for permission to post attachments. When they approve me I will post a pic of him. He is very active, but still isn't using his back left leg. I felt it and from what I can tell it doesn't feel broken.

In order to dose the medications, you'll need a small syringe to measure the amount. Do you have one of these or know of anyone that might have one? A 1ml syringe like a diabetic uses for insulin is they type of syringe. If there is a 24 hour pharmacy they may give you one if you explain you are trying to give fluid to your sick pet.

If you cannot weigh him we'll need a picture of him next to something like a soda.. something to provide reference on his size so we can attempt to estimate his weight.

So glad that you are there to help this baby and you've certainly come to the right place. Until the more knowledgeable and experienced members get back to you with more information I would advise keeping him/her in a dark, quiet and warm place with as little stimulation as possible. I'm am newish to the squirrel community but have worked professionally with domestic animals for years. Temporary paralysis, even in just one limb, is common in animals experiencing shock.

Ugh.. this is going to be difficult. Here is a 36gram juvie flyer I have right now. I am going to ask a couple other folks to weigh in on the weight to use for dosing. Does your baby's tail have as much hair as the one in my picture or is it maybe not as "fanned out"?

Just by comparing the two photos, my guess is 50-55g?

It's fanned out almost as much as the one in the pic you posted.

Ok, I sent the dosing instructions for the Amoxil 500mg.

If you can get a kitchen scale tomorrow and weigh him we should re-calculate the dose if needed. We also feed by weight, so the scale will come in handy. You can get digital kitchen scales at WalMart for about $10 - $15.

This little one needs to still get formula. He'll need Esbilac Puppy formula, the powdered version (including a pic of the can). The liquid version is not the same and will cause diarrhea! For tonight, keep offering him the pedialyte. Tractor Supply usually carries this and some of the big box pet stores.
