    Unhappy Diarrhea and stinky pee

Teddy is acting fine except his tinkle started stinking two or three days ago and now he has diarrhea. The only new thing in his cage was a crepe myrtle branch. I checked the list here to make sure it was a safe branch. Any ideas? He’s 14 months old, 842g, he’s on HHB, plus fresh veggies daily. Thanks in advance.

I wonder if chewing on it could change the urine odor (like asparagus for us). I'd remove the branch until you get to the bottom of it. It might have had something on it, not the branch itself.

Hopefully someone with experience with this will get on soon. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water while the loose stools. Hopefully he'll firm up once the branch is gone.

Thank you, I did remove the branch. He’s drinking lots of water, he’s still running amuck. Hopefully the removal of the branch fixes the problem.

Are you sure the crepe myrtle tree had not been sprayed with any chemicals (insecticides, fungicides, etc.)?

I’m positive, it’s a branch I cut down from my backyard. I only use natural products in my yard. I wouldn’t want to risk my goose or other pets getting sick. I even use EO’s as bug repellent for my dogs.

Teddy’s tinkles are still stinky and he still has loose stool. It has only been a day but I’m worried about him. Should I give it longer?

    Is Teddy a fox squirrel?

So he has improved from diarrhea to loose stools, do I read this correctly?

Do you have access to a vet that will see Teddy? It would be wonderful to get his urine checked out.

Generally recommended with diarrhea to cut out the veggies until it resolves.
What are the veggies you are/were feeding him?

He is a foxer, his diarrhea is gone. Teddy’s usual veggies are lettuce, apples, oranges carrots, avocado is his favorite, spinach, tomato, radish, celery and pumpkin. I think the pumpkin gave him loose stool. My son told me he gave him some pumpkin in passing and I had already given him some that morning. He was getting extra pumpkin. His tinkle is still stinky though.

Is this normal coat changes? He’s so active it’s hard to get a good picture unless I give him a yummy treat.

Thank you so much, it’s his first molt. Would that explain the stinky pee? His vet is out of town for the next month, her Momma was diagnosed with cancer I thought maybe the goose’s vet could see him but he said he doesn’t work with squirrels. We keep various antibiotics on hand for situations like this. Is the stinky pee an annual thing? I looked around but only saw that it’s usually a UTI.

Are you still giving him formula? I know that gives them stinky urine.

He still takes formula but has never had stinky pee before. He only takes 15ccs daily. The formula isn’t needed, he has been on it for over a year. His diet is mostly veggies and HHB.

OK some symptoms of a UTI are stinky pee and we usually see
where they are straining to pee, or they feel the need to pee,
    but nothing comes out.
Is the urine clear or concentrated/dark.
Does she appear to have any discomfort?
You can also give her whole cranberries, OR unsweetened cranberry juice.
Do you have Clavamox or Augmentin
    or Baytril or Cipro?

This is may take on this situation, not that there might not be another issue also.

When you feed formula and do not provide a pre/probiotic, digestion is inhibited, aka stinky pee results from lack of digestion. It also tends to move the pH of the diet more acidic from the randidity that indigestion causes. This can lend to UTI's.

With Spinach, chard, purslane, lambs quarters, sorrel, and beet leaves, that are very high in oxalates, which are known to at high levels can cause damage to the good gut flora (intestinal bacteria) that supports digestion.

Best to switch to a low oxalate greens like Organic Chicory (baby leaves only, that is a very good source of bioavailable calcium (available to the body), vs. spinach which is a very poor one, which also robs the other foods with calcium it is ingested with.

2nd, feed organic Lowfat plain yogurt instead of formula, which contains good dairy digesting bacteria.

Pet Flora, from Safer Medical, you can get from Amazon.com. With 1/64 Tsp out of one capsule daily, his source lasts for years, and has no shelf life issues; worth the investment, top quality and has 29 strains fo bacteria for pets. In the wild squirrels get this from some key sources not available in captivity. This source of good Soil based bacteria replaces what is missing in the diet. With over 80% of the immune system located in the intestinal tract, soil based bacterias are needed to support both digestion and health in these animals.

    https://www.amazon.com/Pet-Flora-Spe...A2XUOVLOF1KYDU

This one has 20 oz; it removes 99 % of bacteria, and heavy metals, leaving the good minerals in your water source:

    https://www.amazon.com/Aquasana-Acti...+bottle+system

There is a 12 oz, and a 22 oz also, but get the whole system, not just the bottle or the cover, also available.

I'm not an expert or rehabber, but just a thought: Could the stinky pee be due to dehydration? Is it just strong smelling or an unusual odor? I wonder if the diarrhea could be causing the dehydration.

Hope he gets better soon! So adorable.
