Default Newbie - two questions - small rash and faint smell

    Hi again.
Thanks to everyone's help and the Esbilac, Kudzu and Oleander are improving! They are 28g and 30g, respectively.
They are eating about 1.5cc per feeding...working up to 2cc, but they are stopping themselves. Poops are regular and normal (I never thought I'd be excited about poop and pee again...)

But, Kudzu has a small rash on both his back 'knees' or haunches? It is red and bumpy. Looks kind of like exzema. I wash everything in All Free and Clear with no fabric softener because all the humans in the house are allergic to the other stuff. They are on a soft cotton baby blanket. Can I put zinc oxide or vasoline on it?

And, Oleander kind of smells funny. Maybe he got pee on him? I gave him a sponge bath. I can't exactly place the smell. Its just odd. Is this normal squirrel smell? b/c Kudzu doesn't smell like it. Or is this indicative of something. It could be a faint ammonia smell? I'm not sure - it just smells 'stale.'

    Thank you,
    Margaret

No Vaseline, it is a Petroleum product. It would be best to use an anti biotic ointment such as neosporin or A&D ointment.
Posting a picture of your babies and the "rash" would be helpful with trying to determine overall condition and what the rash might possibly be.

Could this be urine scald? From pee dripping or staying on his skin......and that does definitely smell funny. If you can get some Silvadene cream, silver sulfadiazine I believe, it is excellent for this and other skin rash or burn issues.

I am not familiar with what that might be. I hope other more experienced ryes will look. They almost look like a cluster of tiny blisters. Is this correct?

Try using warm water and a drop of mild antibacterial soap, or even Dawn, on the rash twice a day. Make sure he's really dried off afterward. If that doesn't work, see if you can get some of the silvadene cream from your vet. Works wonders.

    I will try the dawn.

Is coconut oil OK to use on them?

I'm know I a little paranoid with these guys...
but, could it be ring worm?

I don't think it is ringworm. Coconut oil is ok to use on them, but I think the Silvadene salve or antibiotic ointment would be better. The silvadene salve can be purchased online at some of the pet sites if you can't find it locally.

I just wanted to update and report what I think caused this.

It WAS the blanket. I had been using one my kids old 'lovies' - a small 10"x12" piece of organic flannel with a "washable Satin" material on on the back.
Well, I changed everything out in their bin 2 days ago and used some cut up old polar fleece for them to nest under and some paper towels on the bottom, and within 6 hours, their legs were better.

I had been using neosporin and it was helping some.

They must just be allergic (or, 'contact dermatitis') to whatever that satin material was. Who would have thought?!?
