The source of Pycnogenol is the Cambium Layer of the Pinaster Pine. For those not familiar with the Cambium layer of tree bark, it is the layer that squirrel strip the bark of trees to eat this layer that is dense in anti-oxidant, and calcium. It is also sweet as it contains glucose, fructose, and sucrose. The product likely isn't sweet. PYC that has been studied for 40 years. http://abc.herbalgram.org/site/DocSe...pdf?docID=1741

From study link in prior post:

In summary, we provided an evidence that 9 weeks of 40 mg/kg Pycnogenol® treatment to osteopenic rats resulted in a remarkable decrease in bone turnover biomarkers
What this means is that Pycnogenol decreased bone loss in rats put into menopause.

Estrogen is a key supporter of calcium uptake, so when menopause occurs the level of Estrogen drops in the body, and the uptake of Calcium does so also.

For this source to decrease bone loss after menopause is nothing short of amazing!

This page is the summary of above PDF study file in post #1 on the polyphenols in PYCNOGENOL supporting bone mineralization in female rats without the normal support which estrogen provides in this process.

If your squirrel has MBD this would be a supportive addition to the MBD calcium treatment, as well as following this treatment.

Just don't heat this source, as heat damages the polyphenols.

Update measures for, 'PYC' daily health maintenance doses.

Organika liquid PYC extract (1 ml) syringe is noted to contain 20 mg. of PYC (40 drops to 1 ml. syringe):

For the smaller So. ssp. of the E. Gray squirrel, 2 drops from a ml. non-needle syringe (1 mg.) PYC extract, and split the dose 1 drop each with AM & PM feedings.

For the larger northern E. gray and midsized E. Fox squirrel ssp., 3 drops (1.5 mg.) from a non needle ml. syringe.

Split the dose either 2 drops AM and 1 drop PM, or split it in three, AM, Noon, & PM.

For the largest E. Fox squirrels that inhabit the coastal regions bordering the Atlantic and eastern Gulf States, 4 drops (4 mg.) daily, in a split dose 2 drops ea. AM & PM.

Various studies ranged in dosage from (1 to 10 mg). of PYC for specific ill health conditions in rats.

When there's a specific condition that could be improved or ameliorated with PYC, it is advisable to increase the dose according to what was found to support improve,

or ameliorate specific conditions, and with no ill side effects.

Add noted doses to wet or moist foods like yogurt, baked squash, or applesauce in the diet.

Do not heat this source for it damages the polyphenols it contains.

Looks like Amazon.com is out of stock; I found this source for the liquid Pycnogenol that was less expensive.
