I would NOT put him outside and depend on him coming around every day to be checked. If he does not come around and his teeth go all wonky he will likely suffer a horrible death.

Look how often we have to clip teeth on squirrels....every week for some, every other week for others, 7-10 days for yet others. Their teeth grow pretty darn fast so I'm inclined to believe you'll be able to see whether his tooth is going to come back in relatively short order.

I would get an x-ray when you're able.

#83 is when the top tooth broke. (10/20/26)

#90 is when the bottom was gone. (10/26/16)

#96 shows the bottom tooth before it fell out. You can see how small it was next to the other one.

#106, 112, 145 shows the top tooth growing back in for a sort of timeline of how that one grew. I have several because I was watching the hole.

#246 Tooth broke back through gum. (1/22/17) (On page 13)

At least if nothing else it gives you something to compare it to.

Thank you, jlee. I looked at the pictures and Sammys missing tooth looks like Peeps. I'm going to go ahead on up to see Dr. E tomorrow afternoon and get an X-ray done. That should determine if there is anything under the gum that will be able to re-grow. I don't feel comfortable releasing him, for all the reasons milos mom and sammys mom stated. But, if I'm not going to release him soon, then I have to rearrange who's in what cage so he can get out of the small carrier cage. I feel bad for him, but he's not pacing or acting frantic, he's just hanging out in or on his cube.

Peeps is just hanging out with my husband in his office eating a piece of avocado and passing time till we go see Dr. E this afternoon.

He seems to be able to eat shelled almonds just fine. He's eating boo balls and Henry's blocks but I haven't seen him eat much of his salad assortment.

I will update after we see Dr. E.

Dr. E took an x ray and says that Peeps' tooth broke right below the gum line. . This means he can return to a life in the trees. . The tooth is ready to erupt so she didn't believe he would have any problem with his bottom tooth growing too much.

As glad as I am that he can return to the trees, I'm also a little sad and a lot nervous about him going back out there. . I'm very glad he knows to come home to momma when he needs help.

Wonderful update Mel! So happy to hear Peeps teeth will indeed grow back in time to keep the bottoms from getting too long. Great news to end the night with! Peeps is such a smart little guy knowing to come home to mama when he needs help - I agree with Nancy, he has the best of both worlds!

Great news! I'm so glad it wasn't anything more serious. That tooth sounds like Sammy's top one and it grew back to normal pretty quick. It was a little funny looking at the spot it broke for a bit but what grew behind it was normal.

Peeps is back in the trees, although I am always sad to let him go. . I tested his ability to break open a hazelnut ....and he passed. . He has already been back to visit three times since I let him out this morning. . He also seems quite curious about the three girls in the release cage. . I keep telling him they are much too young for him and he needs to find a more experienced gal!

On Mel, I know it's always so hard to let them go again, but when you know that's what they truly long for, it is bittersweet knowing that is what makes them happy. He knows you are there if you need him. But it sounds to me like he's pretty distracted right now with the new girlies in the RC!

He knows where home is and will come back if needed. It won't be long before that top tooth is in all the way and everything is back to normal!

Peeps is still coming around and eating fine. I have quickly looked at his mouth and I don't see anything irregular, like an extraordinarily long bottom tooth. I will continue to monitor.

I did want to note for any admins that dose meds. While at Dr. E's Peepers weight was 347gr. He seems to be about the typical size of our wild squirrels, maybe a little skinnier, but not much. I am putting this out there for reference sake when a weight has to be estimated based on size and location of the squirrel. I actually was a little surprised he weighed so little.

Interesting. Both of my releases had babies this spring which was a joy, one of the babies died rather suddenly last week, heartbreak, I chose to weigh it, as I am always choosing to try to learn something with every experience. It weighed 515 grams. It was a full grown baby, the mommys teats were shrinking in the past month, so the baby was eating all on it's own. It was born sometime in March.

Oh no! I am so sorry, Nancy, that one of your girls' babies died suddenly. That must have been heartbreaking. It sure is a mystery as to what causes an apparently healthy squirrel to suddenly die. I wish there was an answer.

Yes, the difference in weight is stunning. That is why I wanted to make note of it on the forum. Florida squirrels are significantly smaller than northern squirrels. Peepers is about 18 months old, gets veggies, boo balls, block and his fair share of treats!

Peeps update: I examined my sweet boys mouth this morning and I am happy to say that his top two teeth are of equal length. . As Dr. E said, we don't know if the injury could have injured the tooth bed, which can lead to odontomas, but since he hangs around I will be able to monitor him. Thank you everyone for your help and prayers! . ........until the next crisis with my problem child.....

    Fantastic update!
Now see, if he were released any other place

I know! I am so thankful I listened to your wonderful advice, and my inner voice, and released them here. They were just too friendly to have sent off somewhere for release. I know the friendliness isn't a good thing, but it is what it is. I feel very blessed to still have them in my life.
