I have to say I feel this is totally a Fox Valley 32/40 problem. We have lost far too many babies to this formula. I am almost sure that the large head is a nutritional problem from the FV and not hydrocephalic. Somehow this little has held on to life. Take him off the FV today and get the Esbilac. Frankly I am seeing problems with Esbilac too. If he were mine, I would put him on the Goats Milk formula. I am seeing young babies and babies that are compromised having trouble digesting Esbilac. You are describing some of the symptoms we are seeing with Esbilac in young babies now. I would not take any chances with the Esbilac as he has struggled for so long he can't have any more struggles with formula. I would use the following formula.
    3 part Goats milk
    1 part heavy cream
1 part full fat vanilla yogurt
Start out with 1/4 strength formula for a few feeding, 1/2 strength for a few feedings, 3/4 strength for a little longer and work up to full strength very slowly. This baby could suffer from refeeding syndrome if not carefully transitioned to a new formula. Goats milk is very easy to digest. Poor little baby is in extremely critical condition.
Please know this is not your fault. The FV should be recalled. I am furious at the makers of FV. They will not stand up and tell us the truth. Rather they will let babies die. Good luck with this little sweetheart.

This little one reminds me so much of SammysMom's little Bruiser.

In post #145 Gayle writes that on September 19th he weighs 36 grams.
She got him in on August 14th.
Here's Bruiser at 5 weeks old.

    Forgot to post this yesterday.
This is little Bruiser from a few months back
    playing with his new toy.
He is currently out in the release building waiting spring release.

Thanks to everyone. Our little guy seems to be thriving at his own pace...has more fur and eats well (added Ultraboost) I have been giving him "physical therapy" when I can--taking him out of the incubator when the building is warm enough and having him move on the feeding table so he can work on standing and using his legs. He seems to be getting stronger. The pictures sent of little "Bruiser" were encouraging. Thank you again!

Could you post a current picture? I'd love to see his sweet face!

Are you mixing the Ultraboost with Esbilac or Fox Valley 20/50? The Ultraboost smells yummy, don't you think?

Oh bless his little heart. What does he weigh now?
What formula are you feeding him.

Does he go home with someone, or is he at
    a rehab facility.
Just asking because I wondered if he would do better
    with a home environment.

I am totally smitten with your little one.

Poor lil one he definitely seems to be compromised...could be genetic..may be why he's no longer with his mother thank you for working so hard I agree with Nancy...I would have him in my bra or in a fleece in my shirt...sometimes giving them love helps them thrive better than anything else you can do for them

I come into the peace of wild things

And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Can you tell me what formula you are feeding him again? I have used the Ultraboost with all my babies and I do a 50/50 mix of powdered formula and powdered Ultraboost to 2 parts water. (1/2 tsp powdered formula, 1/2 tsp powdered Ultraboost to 2 tsp. very warm water. I NEVER used the Fox Valley 32/40. IT was either Esbilac or Fox Valley 20/50.

Your little guy looks like he could use the maximum calories from the Ultraboost which is the 50/50 mix as I stated above.

Please tell me you have STOPPED feeding him the Fox Valley 32/40.

Every tiny baby I've fostered (regardless of species) benefitted from being in my shirt on my chest for at least 1 hour a day and physical skin to skin contact. I understand why you wear the gloves but they need physical touch to thrive. (Even snotty nasty kittens go in my shirt.)

Good luck when that little baby. He could use a boob pouch worn around your neck and resting on your chest. I promise, the results are amazing. Check out Kangaroo Care for premie human babies and statistics for survival and growth!

Thank you all for caring so much about our little guy. He is 29.4 grams at last weigh-in (on Wednesday when photo was taken) We feed him Ultraboost and FV20/50 as Mel1959 said--I've also tried some apple baby food and he licks it from his lips, since his contemporaries are all on solids at this point. I agree with Shewhosweptforest that this is a genetic condition, which his two siblings who did NOT survive also had, and were abandoned by the mother on purpose. We are a wildlife rehab facility with over 65 volunteers and 5 licensed rehabbers. Although our goal is to release our charges back to the wild, we're taking his care one day at a time. He has been doing better with his bathroom issues, not getting so plugged up and is more mobile. He is taken from the incubator and loved and cuddled and encouraged to stand and walk all through the day. There are many people here who love him dearly, and now it seems he has many more from the Squirrel Board. I will keep you posted on his progress and supply more pictures. Thanks so much for caring!!

Bless you Linda D for the love and care you are giving this precious one. I do find too that all babies thrive with contact and touch from even humans. So happy to hear your center allows this important contact as he recovers. With your care I pray he will make it to the trees one day. Please keep us updated. He has touched so many hearts here at TSB.
