I thought I saw some seizure activity out of twine around nine am. She was doing the nursing trance thing only she was not nursing.. Maybe stargazing as well.

But this evening - a whole new squirrel.

She has been on baytril. I am having a hard time getting doxie from my current vet. She insists that the FDA has banned baytril from meat animals. She said she would check on Doxie. I did find where NPR did a story on the banning in 2005 .. But I can also find it on sale for chicken use. So very confusing. She insists since there is a "season " then they are game animals and will not proscribe anything other than SMZ TMP.

Mean while my other vet wants me to stack Baytril ( inject) and SMZ tmp ( oral) so I may go with his recommendation. He is freaking out over gut flora too LOL. Gut won't matter if the squirrel is dead !!! Argh .. Either way she is much improved from the squirrel she was last night.

As far as what this is.. Both think it's a pneumonia like thing similar to Boardatella .
She might go in for a check up tomorrow to the non baytril vet but then again since she is improving on the meds she refuses to give .. Then maybe we won't. If she is worse we certainly will.

The boy is being treated just because ... He's fine.

This baytril thing bothers me ! I love that vet except for when I need meds like that in this instance .. Fortunately vet # 2 knows it's not like I am dosing the squirrel and turning her loose 3 days later!

She's gonna be here at least 2 more weeks ( best case senerio) but now with this set back... Definatly longer . Probably 4 . God willing that she pulls through.

    Twine passed away yesterday.

    3/4 are dead.

She had responded to the medications and I thought we were out of the woods.
But I found her dead yesterday morning with a horrible prolapsed bowel.
Her bum looked normal at 9pm the night before when I medicated her and check her butt for wetness. Nothing.
    By 9am she was dead.

I spent all day yesterday packing her body in a cold box and over nighter her to Georgia to Karen Bailey for necropsy.

I know results won't be in before time to save # four who is still slowly bleeding from the bowel. His poos are solid but there is often blood around the poo on the tissue.

He is really grumpy and hates me for all the medication etc and he feels horrible.

    Gods speed little ones.

I wonder if they all ate something before you got them? You wondered about obstruction? Since the fecal came back normal (except for the blood you saw?) then perhaps a toxin or obstruction?

Praying for you and the last little one.

I have had them for so long though.. And two were from another mother.

I am wondering if it was something they got ahold of in my release cage.
They could have been tossed poison from a neighbor ( though none complain ) or eaten something I am not aware off .. Poisonous plant ?

The necropsy has started so we will see.

The cage has been used before for over a year. So it's something new if that was it.

Poor Twine, she had a hard life. She was the on that survived the FV 32/40 ordeal.
She lost all her siblings. But she was loved dearly.

ML, do you know if they will be doing PCR testing for viruses?
There are several hemorrhagic viruses that might be involved. Some of the odd viruses/bacteria that come to mind are hanta, parvovirus and Leptospira (bacteria). Also, hemorrhagic, enteropathogenic E.coli 0157. ????

The way they were all affected makes me think viral.

Sorry for your losses. I know this has been devastating.

I did not ask cause they are offering services for free I suppose . Karen Bailey from university of Georgia and a fellow Rehabber is doing it. I suspect they will be.

My vets do not think it was lepto. No Jaundice. Nothing in the Twines urine to indicate kidney involvement . But .. Untill testing is done.. One implied 3 would not come down with it at the exact same week. But it could be.

We don't "normally " have haunta but anything could happen.

What do you know about West Nile? I have heard it can cause a colitis ..

Just throwing it out there. I really have no idea. There is a parvo that affects rodents but it's usually asymtomatic in rats. It's not the same as the dog Parvo. There is a human Parvo infection also. Fifth disease (slapped cheek syndrome) is Parvo B19 so there are many Parvo infections.

I think hemorrhagic West Nile is pretty rare but ANYTHING is possible.
