Default Off topic: looking for crow help

    Hi,

I have a fledgling crow, who is alert, but who's face is covered in what I think is blow fly eggs (not larvae yet). I will take her to a rehabber as soon at they open tomorrow (1pm) but in reading online, it seems that they can hatch within hours (and typically come out at night).

I'm trying to remove as many as possible with tweezers and saline solution, but there are so many that I'm not making a lot of progress.

Do you guys happen to know of any active boards where I could get tips asap tonight (or any bird experts with any pointers here). Sorry for the off topic--I just know there are many great rehabbers and thought you might be able to point me in the right direction.

    Thank you!!

Reach out to psychobird or to pappy1264.
She may know how to get in touch with psychobird, and
I think pappy has raised a few birds herself before.

Sorry for the late response! I just went for it and started softening the mass of stuff with saline and then removing with tweezers. This is the before pic. Will try to get an after, but I got most of them, though some have hatched and I couldn't get to them not sure if I can swab them with something maybe?

    Thank you!!!

Here she is now. Have her in a box in my bathroom. Leaving the light on because I read they hatch at night? But I can turn it off if it's better for her!

I also haven't fed her because I wasn't sure what to feed and whether the maggots would hatch into it. I have some wet cat food if I should feed though.

    Thank you!!!

Crow was/ still is, really infested. Would you have any Capstar or Ivermectin?
Either can be used as a flush to kill those maggots.
With Ivermectin you would want to mix 1 part Ivermectin to 9 parts of water and using
it in small quantities directly on the maggots. It must be applied as soon as it is mixed
and any of the solution that is left over should be discarded.

i just ordered some ivermectin for a squirrel this morning but won't arrive until Thursday I have a friend with some but I won't be able to get it until morning.

When I make the solution is it ok to get in her eyes and mouth? That's where the worst of it is

    Thank you!

I can see from the first picture they had gotten in it's mouth, you have to realize that is not good news as they
could have gone internal as well. Unfortunately I know nothing about oral dosing a bird but do know there has to be some
guideline on dosing orally. As for the eye, not sure if that's a safe thing to do or not, is the eye still there or does
it appear destroyed from the maggots?
With as infested as that poor thing is and was you need to realize it's chances for survival are not very good especially
for a bird. Thank you for caring and wanting to give it every chance, wish I could be of more help and hope it can make it.

Thank you. One thing that you can't see from the pic is that almost none of them have hatched--they are still mostly eggs though a few are moving. I'm hoping they haven't gone internal but will take her to the clinic as soon as they open tomorrow.

Thanks again for the late night advice. I really, really appreciate it!

Oh and eyes were both still ok since not hatched yet. I'm just freaking out hoping it stays that way until The clinic opens.

    Me too!
Have you tried a small brush such as toothbrush or fingernail brush to "comb" them out?

Psychobird, I know nothing about birds but did want to ask for future reference... Is Capstar safe for birds?
    I wouldn't have a clue. Thank you.

That is a great idea about the tooth brush! And yes, I am taking her to the rehabber right now--their clinic hours don't start until 1pm, but Im hoping to get her first in line. I'm going to pick up a toothbrush on my way and will try to clear more out while we wait. Thank you for the great suggestions!!

Thanks for all the help last night and this morning! You guys rock!

Got her to the clinic this morning, and prognosis so far is pretty good. Since we got most of the eggs off last night not too many had hatched. There were some in her eye and in a small abscess in her mouth, and she has an eye infection (which may have been the original issue). We picked the rest out, washed her head in a disinfectant, she got antibiotic eye drops and pedialyte, and she will be getting an oral anti parasitic of some sort today, and a full bath when she's rested a bit. She is perching on her own, vocalizing, and taking fluids on her own.

A vet will be seeing her this week, but she seems bright and alert so hoping for the best.

Thank you guys soooo much. Used the toothbrush tip to get a bunch of the leftovers out, and it really helped a ton.

Will let you know when I hear more but wanted to say thanks!!!
