Default Looking For Babies Three Days Now

This was a thread erroneously in non-life threatening because the mother did die.

I am looking all over for the babies and listening. But I can't find them. It's not very warm here.

This squirrel was coming to my house for nuts. From a residential area with no woods, only individual trees in front and back yards.

I am assuming she wouldn't come farther than about 1/8 mile.

Any ideas? I am looking at the base of trees, up for hawks and crows, I have very good hearing and I strain to hear. I even go at night and distributed fliers.

    Any ideas are welcome.

    Thank you.

Are you aware of what baby cries sound like?
I would look for dreys /nests and watch for activity,
it's not that long (depending on age) that babies crawl
out looking for mom. If they are extreamly young they
will still be in nest but I'd listen for the cries for momma.

OK. Thank you. I have heard the YouTube videos of the cries. I am straining to hear. The birds are distracting but I am sure I heard something once or twice -- but they quickly stopped.

What do you do to get the firemen to help rescue them? TV?

I estimate they are around 4 weeks old.

    Thanks again.

When you think you hear something look around for a drey or hollow spot in a tree. if you find one use
something to bang single strokes on the trunk of the tree. Hit once wait and listen and then do it again
the same way. The vibration will carry and the babies likely will cry out.

I've seen the heartwarming stories of firemen tree "rescues," always makes me wonder what planet it
was on. I've never had luck even appealing to get a cat down, a squirrel.... can't see that happening at
    least not around here.

A local tree service here in ct helped get a cat down when i asked. Play the starving babies card to the nah degree. Just call around to get a feel for their responses. Hate to say it, but a woman might get a better response. However, if it's a secretary who answers, you could be the sweet guy she finds help for. What I'm saying is play to your audience to get what you need.
I just can't tell you how sorry I am about your special friend..
Remember they can be in buildings like garages and attics too when you're looking for their nest.
    Squirrels, squirrels and more squirrels....

Default GOT THE BABIES!-- Re: Looking For Babies Three Days Now

The nest was right near my house, in a Beech. The babies appeared this afternoon, about 7 weeks old. Very perky and good. They're all in a box now waiting for the rescue place tomorrow. I posed a little more detail in the thread on Non-Life Threatening. Thanks for the help!

Thank you for helping these little ones.
Put a lot of fleece or old t shirts in the box with them.
They love to hide. Remember dark, quiet and warm.
IF you have a heating pad place that half under the container
    set on low.
Actually boxes are not the best, as they could chew through.
Do you have anything like a tall plastic bin that you can put air
    holes in?
Do you have access to a syringe?
Where in Long Island are you located?

How many are there? They probably need some hydration if their mom has been gone for several days. Good save!

Whew, what a relief! Thank you for saving them! I've had these babies on my mind all weekend and I am so very happy they have been found and are safe! Please do consider hydrating them as soon as you can with the hydration formula mix as I'm sure going that long without nurishment from mama has caused major dehydration and they can't properly digest food if they are dehydrated. Glad to hear you already have a rehabber lined up for them.

    I m taking them to a rehabber.

I wish there were some alert process on this message board to email or whatever because it is hard to keep up with the messages as I would have wanted to. The rehabber had told me not to risk giving them anything.

    They're going soon.
