UTI treatment?

I'm caring for an adult female squirrel (wild, not house pet) that has what we think is a UTI infection. She struggles to urinate and the urine is cloudy. Her vagina is very puffy and though it's hard to tell, it almost looks like there is a small protrusion from her vagina when she urinates.

She is on.02 ml of Baytril once per day + .15 Metacam. I've heard we should see results in @3 days. Today is her 4th day, but the struggle to urinate has not subsided.

She sleeps all day and grooms herself constantly. She comes out of her nesting box to eat. She seems very alert and not the least bit stressed to be in a rehab cage (with a nesting box and hammock).

Any insight, advice, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

What is the weight of the squirrel (in grams preferably)?
What is the strength of Baytril and the Metacam?
How often are you giving the meds per day?

She is on.02 ml of Baytril + .15ml Metacam, each med once per day.
We estimate that she weighs 425-450 grams.

Are you positive you're giving her 0.02...the first 2 tiny lines on the syringe?

The reason I'm asking is because that dose is WAAAAYYY low. Coincidentally, the dose for a 500 grams squirrel is 0.20.

So, I just want to make sure you are dosing what you think you are. Please confirm and we'll go from there.

Oh, and is it safe to assume that you're using a 1cc syringe?

Do you know the strength of the baytril?

Going on the assumption that your Baytil is 22.7mg/ml strength the Total Daily Dose would be 0.20. That means you would give her 0.10 TWICE each day, approximately 12 hours apart.

Again assuming that your Metacam is 1.5mg/ml strength the daily dose would be 0.05 and this is given ONCE a day.

Make sure she is getting LOTS of fluids. Try offering her fresh cranberries (if you can find them).


EDIT: One of the side effects of Metacam can be blurry urine or black/tarry stool). You should also be making sure she is well hydrated while on Metacam.

The Baytril is 100mgs per ml.
The syringe is 1cc.
I am measuring it out by using 2 hairlines on the syringe - not the thick lines.

Okay, using Baytril 100 the Total Daily Dose would be 0.05...so you would give her 0.03 twice a day (I rounded up). If you cannot dose her twice a day she would get the 0.05 once a day.

I'll look for cranberries for sure. For now, I've seen her drink water and I also give her 1/2 a frozen grape at a time, and pieces of watermelon.

On the 1cc syringe will I be giving her 3 hairlines, 2x per day? I put it in peanut butter which she goes bonkers for, so dosing her 2x per day won't be an issue.

No, she's not getting enough.

Since you're using Baytril 100 the Total Daily Dose would be 0.05...so you would give her 0.03 twice a day (I rounded up). If you cannot dose her twice a day she would get the 0.05 once a day.

Also, please back off a bit on the Metacam. She should be getting 0.05 once a day.

You're very welcome.

Usually, (as you've heard) it works pretty quickly. So I'm thinking 3 days or so you should be seeing some positive results. I would dose her for 7 days. Since she's been on meds for 4 days already you may see the results a bit sooner...maybe.

Hello I'm in the same boat with my little girl. UTI..Was wondering what dose would be , but my Baytril 10% . She is 240 grams. She is a north American red squirrel. My sweetheart. I had been reading though the thread , but I realized the Baytril you was referring to was different from what I have.
