Default Which Antibiotic to use on a Wound or Abcess? SMELL IT!

Whether or not an abcess is extremely malodorous tells us what antibiotics to use. Per HRT4SQRLS, addressing a thread about a wound that "stunk up the entire house":

Any time you have a wound that smells that bad you are dealing with an anaerobe. Even in the lab they smell horrible. You need to add an antibiotic to cover anaerobes as the SMX-TMP won't be enough. The drugs for anaerobes are Clindamycin, Metronidazole and Clavamox does have some anaerobic coverage also.

    Horrible stench (anaerobic bacteria): use
    (1st choice) CLINDAMYCIN,
    (2nd choice) METRONIDAZOLE,
    (3rd choice) CLAVAMOX.

Mild or no odor (aerobic bacteria):
    Baytril or SMZ-TMP
    (Bactrim, Sulfatrim)
