I just turned your photos.
Did SammysMom send you dosing for the infant ibuprophen?
Is that what you have?
OK I see you got him in August 2013.
Praying he'll be feeling better asap He is adorable
Thank you so much for getting the pain meds in him! He is beautiful. Poor little guy. We will do our best to help you help him. This site is all about a bunch of different rehabbers and squirrel owners and squirrel lovers, putting their minds and ideas together to help.
So, the more info and pics you provide, the more we can discuss his situation, and try to come up with the best way to treat it.
I wish I had something to add but love. Any chance of him seeing a vet? Could he have caught his fingers in a cage door and pulled?
OMG poor little guy. Come on TSB there has got to be a member in BC that can help this poor squirrel. He needs to see an outlaw vet or something. I can't imagine that paw could possibly heal on it's own.
This little guy really needs help, and prayers, too.
Reviewing his situation:
Injury happend 3 weeks ago!
She said he caught his paw in something, and panicked.
Has licked the fur off of paw, due to pain
Losing hair on the side of his mouth, from the constant licking.
It looks like she lives in British Columbia, so vets will not see him
I have been studying his picture, and the paw looks very badly damaged. I am thinking broken, if not crushed fingers. It appears quite swollen.
First, do we have anyone in her area that can help her?
Perhaps you can pm your town to Island Rehabber.
I think she is giving ibuprofen, but I am thinking tramadol might provide better pain relief for this kind of injury. It is much stronger. I imagine that injury is agonizing, because fingets and hands have extra nerve endings. The pain is causing the poor little guy to lick it raw.
So, first, lets see how much relief he gets from the ibuprofen.
Meantime, can you call around to your family and friends, and see if any of them have some of the meds I am going to list? (These are things you might need, and generally, you will only need 1 pill to do a full treatment on a squirrel. We will dose the meds for you)
So, see if you can find:
Tramadol, ( not with acetaminophen in it)
Prednisone
Cipro
Any other antibiotic you can find
Meloxicam
All of these are very commonly prescribed, and most people will have at least one or 2 pills leftover from their prescription.
Does anybody else think a round of antibiotics might be a good idea?
What about a round of prednisone?
He needs to get enough relief, so that he will stop licking it. We all know that wrapping it is not an option. So, the best I can come up with right now, is providing adequate pain relief, so it has a chance to heal, before he loses it.
Anybody? Any suggestions?
Just please be very careful with what meds you give together. I know that Tramadol is stronger, but I do not believe it has the anti inflammatory properties that NSADS have. However you must NEVER combine NSAIDS and prednisone. Is it possible that we can get this baby to a vet? I do agree that antibiotics are a good idea at this point. Medicam is probably a good choice if you can get it. Also do NOT give this with prednisone though. I am not really sure that pred is something that is in order here either. Infant ibuprofen is probably a better choice along with antibiotics.
Yes, you MUST check with TSB before giving any meds, some cannot be given together.
But please start checking around, and see what meds from the list you can find.
Hopefully, we will find a way to get this little one to a vet. Do we have a licensed rehabber in her area?
Please check in often, and give us updates, as many are worried about your little one.
Many TSB prayers are coming your way! :Love_Icon
Oh man 3 weeks like that. Poor little one. Please someone find a TSB member in the area and get this squirrel some much needed help.
I am definitely worried about this squirrel. Please keep us updated.
poor thing!! that's gotta hurt. yes, it would be great to find a "safe/outlaw" vet, even if it means a drive
Oh, that is very nasty. He needs to be kept away from his paw - the licking is causing a lot of this. He likely won't keep a bandage on, so I would think an elizabethan collar is in order. He won't like it, but he needs to be physically prevented from messing with this.

Once he has this on you can apply antibiotic cream or ointment to the paw and keep it on there without worrying about him either licking it off and ingesting it or licking the paw. Please do this ASAP.
Also. I can pretty much guarantee that you have a pinch point in your cage. Is it a parrot type cage with wire bars, rather than welded molded bars? You want to look at the corners, along the top and bottom, and around any food doors. You are looking for places where the bars are closer together than the rest of the cage. The toe slides in, and when they try to move and find their paw stuck, their immediate instinct is to yank it to get away.
If the cage bars are not of the molded type like a Critter Nation cage, I can pretty much guarantee you will find issues. You need to close those gaps. Lots of people use long strips of fleece to wrap the areas in order to block the gap. Any place where the bars are closer to each other than a half inch need to be addressed.
The injury happened January 27th(just checked as I took a picture of him, not the paw that day) so a bit over a week ago. I just read my original post where I said he is walking on "3 weeks" which was meant to be "3 legs" sorry for the confusion! The owner of the squirrel board messages me and has recommended children's motrin and will see how he's doing in a few days. He had to have caught it in the metal of his cage somehow so we have ordered a new cage specifically for squirrels to avoid this happening again somehow. We checked and there is no string, and working on if there's a vet he can see but in the meantime it will be kept clean and be given something for the pain. He was just on a normal rat block as the squirrel block we order didn't come in time and last time it caused his hair to fall out easier so I figure that would be why his face has gotten so bald easily!! The rest of his diet my mom has gotten from all the recommendations on here so other than his paw he is a happy squirrel! Thank you everyone for your help and your concerns, I will keep you all updated!
Here is a picture taken of him on the 18th, in his "sleeping cage"
