    Default Weak Baby

    Hi...

I am hoping someone can help me with this...

I have successfully raised and released at least 8 babies in my lifetime.
I always start with rehydrating them..
and then feeding them esbilac. etc.
Moving them to larger outdoor cages.. and providing them rodent chow and seeds etc. found locally (acorns, black berries, etc.) until they leave on their own.. usually takes a few months.. (I am not a licensed rehabber.. )

I have never had one that suddenly seemed to have a calcium defiency... if that is whats going on..
(I am guessing I have been very lucky)

    just last week..
I received a call from a friend who found a baby squirrel just laying in the hot sun on the street (asphalt)

When I got to her house.. the baby barely was eating.. laying on its side.. and very lethargic.

I immiadetaly started her on rehydration.. (pedialyte) and she perked up some.. (it is a female)

But she has never really been active.. and seems just weak to me..

She takes the esbilac ok.. not a voracious appetite.. but she is eating..

She never raises her head.. she doesn't make a sound.. (no little squirrel rumbles.. screams etc.)
    and she rarely moves..

only to snuggle into her bed .. (fleece blanket)

She is very wobbly.. and her tail never raises along her back.

and unless she is eating.. she is asleep.

She is fully furred.. hair on tail is filled in.. and her eyes are open.

    She poops ok.. normal
and her pee is totally clear!

I stimulate her to poop and pee (sometimes she only pees) each time before I feed her.

I am guesstimating about 5 weeks old.

I was concerned about the calcium and I know its pretty life threatening.. so this morning I decided to try crushing a tums.. I mixed it with her esbilac and have been giving her a little at a time.
I have never done that before.. so I was afraid to even do that.. but I thought it may save her..

I then came across this community.

Can anyone tell me if there is anything I am doing wrong?
    Not doing?
    Should be doing?

    Any help would be appreciated...

    Thank you so much..

oh.. and let me add.. she is thin. From the first day.. you can feel her spine .. (I just thought at first it was because she was dehydrated and who knows how long she was laying in the curb on the street.. ) She doesn't seem to be gaining any weight.

Welcome to TSB and thank you for what you do

How much does she weigh and how much does she normally eat?
    I'm assuming no injuries?
And to double check, the Esbilac is with Pro/Pre biotics, right?

Also, pictures pictures pictures can help out a lot!

You might try a drop of syrup or even better, molasses on her tongue to perk her up a bit. Sending for the little one.

Sound like you are doing every thing right and she just needs a little TLC. (((hugs)))
*remember to feed 5-7% of her body weight ever 4 hours.
