Oh no CSL, sorry to hear one if you're a little foxers is having tail issues. Perhaps as Gayle mentioned, the end of it is dead and might just fall off. I know how we worry about our injured wild little ones. You know I have a lame tailed wild boy in my yard that seems to be surviving just fine - squirrels are amazing at being adaptable to impediments. Praying this little one will adjust as well.

    Mating question:
Do they mate if mama still has babies living with her and is still nursing?

    There's a story to follow...

This sounds like an R rated story! I haven't seen that happen, but I am not up on the particulars...

    Story still to come

Nougie had a puncture wound on her hip....from the cat that caught her as a baby...I assume that's why her tail never worked.

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Well, not an R rated mating story, lol, although I've seen some before!! It was earlier this week, I've NEVER seen this many males going absolutely coo coo, all chasing ONE female...and I think it may have been ButchKin they were after. I wish I had my video camera, it was one of the funniest, nuttiest things I've seen!! It was this long row of males, some making really loud noises, all after one poor girl. Some males would lose her in the chase and end up looking at me like "which way did she go?!" and would end up resuming their place in line, in the chase. Oh, and this went on...and on...and on...

Would this mean ButchKin's babies are on their own now? Or at least she's not nursing anymore, if she possibly just mated?

I have this very same question.

One of my releases had three babies this spring, and I assume they are still living with her, and she still has nipples, though they seem to be less huge than they were a few weeks ago.

Just last week, a male walked right up to her and sniffed her butt. She doesn't normally let any squirrel get close to her, and I thought, good heavens, could she be in heat? I am new to squirrel mating practices and times and seasons, so I was just curious. There wasn't any hot chase, but I began to wonder how soon they get pregnant after raising a litter.

Let's see if I remember how to post pics from my phone...

Here she is, still leader of the pack, ButchKin herself!!!
ButchKin, and some good sized nipples...and let me add, it looks like I've got some other nursing mom's, too
I'm running a soup kitchen for unwed mother squirrels

Other stories for another time, I think something may have happened to one eyed Peepers and there's been another scary confrontation by a next door neighbor...
And my mom is having health problems

ButchKin always looks so lovely, sorry about any neighbor issues, we all seem to have them (comes with the territory). So sorry too for your mom's health issues you are feeling sad about there.

Oh goodness CSL, as usual it sounds like there is a lot going on in your yard - I've lost count of how many litters of babies your girlies have had! Good to see a post with some pictures on your thread - I've missed seeing your beautiful foxers. Sorry to hear about your mom's health issues.

It's over 100 degrees!!! SO not used to temps this high right here by the bay!! San Francisco 104, just crazy. My poor crew is so not used to this, poor guys. I've got extra water bowls out. I wish I could think of something more. I can go see if the hardware store has beach umbrellas still, stick one in the other cabana barrel.

Wow, those high temperatures there really surprise me, stay hydrated and keep your friends that way too, hoping for cooler days ahead for you

Trip to hardware store this morning, got 2 room fans for in the house, and got their last 2 beach umbrellas. Put one umbrella alongside the one we already had, trying to create extra shade for my gang, and hopefully a bit more privacy from a CREEPY guy next door who apparently watches me and hates squirrels. I also recently got an extra water dish, it's not on the ground, but up high, and refills itself as the level goes down. It's crazy hot, never cooled down overnight.

So, I was just feeding two, having trouble figuring out who one of them was, because the ears were weird. Clearly a regular, they knew me, but their ears looked so small or laying down or something...then I saw blood behind each ear. I've been so fortunate to not see a lot of injuries, but many have disappeared. I haven't seen one eyed Peepers in two or three months at least. Anyway, I'll keep my eye out for this injured one, poor sweetheart.
I hope he still has ears. Please say some prayers for this one.
